FEMA Launches New Blog FEMA just launched a new blog () in order to have an ongoing conversation with all stakeholders before, during, and after a disaster.? You’re encouraged to join the conversation and leave a comment on the blog. This is the first blog post that was written by FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate: Welcome to the first-ever FEMA blog Posted by: Administrator Craig Fugate At FEMA we have a Facebook page, Twitter page, I tweet and earlier this year we launched our first-ever mobile website, but what we didn’t have was a blog. Well, now that we have one, you’re probably wondering what you can expect. Plain and simple, this will be another tool we’ll use to communicate and let you know what we’re up to. This won’t be another way to put out our press releases - this is a way to communicate directly with you. You’ll eventually hear from team members from across our agency, from our regional offices to our field offices, supporting local disaster recovery efforts. We will provide information before, during and after disaster strikes and we will highlight best practices, innovative ideas, and insights that are being used across emergency management and across the country. So as we get our blog up and running, we’ll also be looking to you for ideas, tips and feedback. If you have a question you’d like us to address, send it our way. If you have a creative idea you’d like us to highlight, let us know. We’re looking to you – the rest of our team – to be our partners in this endeavor. Leave a comment below and let’s start the conversation. - Craig This news story and other Individual & Community Preparedness news can be found on our website at . Looking forward to Winter Break and Happy New Year! As we count down the last weeks of 2010, I would like to briefly summarize CEMHS activity this past year and relate several significant points to our future 2011 activity. There has been much organizational growth and development this year (about 650 participants) drawn from all levels of education, types of educational institution, and from enhanced partnerships with key agencies (state, federal, local), public organizations, and major stakeholders. This growth has allowed us the opportunity to reflect and polish our organizational objectives (specifically: advancing EM-HS academics and programs at the state-level) and strengthen partnerships and networks among the academic and professional communities. In January, 2010—the California Emergency Management and Homeland Security Education and Training Strategic Initiative was released and has guided much of our recent activity. This activity is directed at developing a “vertical track” of EM-HS education and training programs at the state-level that incorporates “standardized, accessible, and available” programs and courses from the K-12 level through terminal degree program (masters or doctoral). Educational tracks supporting first responders, middle level managers, executives, and researchers are to be developed and made readily available. In some cases, model curriculum already exists that we can incorporate into the plan. In other cases, there is not much guidance on curriculum and we must develop it ourselves. This discussion and related educational gap analysis was completed at the CEMHS Third Annual Emergency Management and Homeland Security Summit in October hosted by the CSU Chancellor’s Office. The proceeding notes and “next steps” will be released to the CEMHS Planning Committee shortly and available for public distribution after the first of the year. Relating to next year, we will be finishing up the Strategic Initiative Final Report and submitting to the California Emergency Management Agency. The final report has two key sections: a discussion of the core foundations (and key definitions) involved with EM-HS education and training AND a framework or blueprint for proto-type EM-HS programs in the vertical track configuration. So K-12 education programs and campus preparedness materials must be organized and coordinated (for County Boards of Education, school districts, individual schools/faculty/administration/staff, and students/parents). Training and Certificate Programs developed and implemented that reflects the needs of local communities, students, and employers in the workforce. Associate degree programs should be designed with lower division transferable units into Bachelors Programs that matriculate and graduate EM-HS professionals placed with quality career positions. There is also the discussion of advanced degree programs and specializations found within the wider discipline and fields of EM-HS. So we are interested in developing a full portfolio of these programs. We will keep you posted early next year on the specific scope of activity, deliverables, timelines, resources, and results of these various organizational initiatives. Until next year, have a safe and enjoyable Holiday!
