NEWMARKET ANNUAL HERITAGE ART CONTEST 2020

Eligibility

To be eligible, the subject of the artwork must focus on the heritage of the Municipality of Newmarket. This may include, but is not limited to, the Municipality’s culture, society, economy, history, significant events, architecture or natural environment (past or present). The contest is open to all residents of the Province of Ontario.

Entries must be original two-dimensional artwork created in any medium, AND be created no earlier than Jan 1, 2019.

Schedule

Submission dates- Monday, March 23 to Thursday, April 30, 2020

• Artwork(s) must be submitted during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Recreation & Culture Department, Town of Newmarket Municipal Offices, 395 Mulock Drive, Newmarket

• A registration form MUST accompany each artwork.

Exhibition dates- Monday, May 11 to Friday, July 31, 2020

• Artwork will be displayed in the 395 Community Gallery of the Municipal offices. Viewing times are during regular scheduled hours of operation 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Closed weekends and Statutory Holidays.

Jury dates - Week of May 11, 2020

• All submissions will be judged the week of May 11. Winners will be notified by email.

Artwork pick up - Monday, August 3 to Friday, August 7, 2020

• Artwork(s) must be picked up between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Rules

1. Artwork(s) must be ready to be hung and mounted with either a wire backing or large D-ring(s). These mounting mechanisms work best with our new hanging system and help to better ensure the safety of the artwork(s). See attached Hanging Requirements.

2. Artwork(s) must not exceed more than 30lbs in weight. The maximum size of artwork(s), including frame, cannot exceed 48” in width x 48” in height.

3. All artwork(s) must be for sale.

4. If an artwork sells, a representative from the Town of Newmarket will contact the artist and discuss next steps. All artwork(s) must remain on display until the exhibit is over. The Town of Newmarket will arrange pick up with the purchaser. The Town of Newmarket will receive a commission of 40% on artworks sold.

5. The artist is responsible for insurance for their artwork(s). The Town of Newmarket shall not be held responsible for loss or damage to artwork(s) after it has been submitted.

6. The artist is responsible for the delivery and costs incurred of their artwork(s) to the Recreation & Culture Department at 395 Mulock Drive and the pick up of their artwork(s) when the exhibit is over.

7. All artwork(s) must be an original creation by the applicant artist without the assistance of an instructor. The artwork(s) must be recent, no earlier than January 1, 2019.

8. Artists may submit up to three (3) artworks.

9. A completed registration form must accompany each artwork.

10. All artwork(s) must be labeled on the reverse as follows:

1. Name of artist

2. Current address

3. Home telephone number and email address

4. Title of artwork, Medium, date of completion, and dimensions of work

5. Sale price of artwork, including if you are an HST registered artist or not

11. Please title your work as it makes it easier for the judges to remember.

Hanging Requirements

To help better ensure the safety of the artwork(s) while on exhibit, please mount works with either a wire backing or large D-ring(s). These mounting mechanisms work best with our hanging system.

The hanging system we use are ‘hooks and cables’. Below are images and instructions on how to use the hooks (see figure 1 and 2). If you do not use the preferred mounting mechanisms, we cannot guarantee that other mounting systems will be compatible with our hooks. If a work arrives without being ready to hang, it will be excluded from the show.

Information

Artworks are judged by a panel of guest artists and/or art professionals.

Each year the Heritage Art Award is presented to one (1) winning artist. The winner receives $200 and in addition, the winning work will be purchased by the Town and will form a part of the Town’s permanent collection.

There will be to four (4) Honourable Mention prizes of $150 each.

The Town of Newmarket Municipal Offices is located at 395 Mulock Drive, north side of Mulock Dr., west of Bayview Ave.

For drop off, enter by front doors. The first door immediately to your left is the Recreation & Culture Department. Leave your work/s with reception there.

The Community Gallery is located within the Municipal Offices. Enter offices by the front doors. The gallery space is at the end of the main hallway to the right of the Plant Orb.
