January came and went and we have not seen enough of the rain. Yet our spring flowers are blooming and we are busy as a bee in working on a new schedule for the year 2014.The House of Pacific Relations and all other organizations of Balboa Park are starting to prepare for next year’s centennial celebrations of the Panama California Exhibition. A new organization was founded who will have oversight of all planned activities. It is called Balboa Park Celebration Inc. or BPCI. Gerry Braun, a hired contractor is the Director of Communications for BPCI. This group will be responsible for the broad advancement of the economic development and will focus on attracting tourists to the area and increase hotel revenue. BPCI will have full control of all planned events starting in July 2014.Important up-coming dates: Membership Meeting is on Sunday March 2nd at 4:30 pm at the House of Germany in Balboa Park. The House of Germany is hosting the HPR Ladies Auxiliary on March 12th. Keep your calendar open for the annual Springfest on May 4th.Wishing you all a wonderful spring! The agenda covered the following points:The German American San Diego FoundationGerman Currents Film FestivalBalboa Park Centennial 2015 Celebrations – Opportunities for Program PartnershipsDr. Stephen Hollmann welcomed the audience of about 20 participants. The meeting room was provided by the law firm of Duane Morris and was located in the 29th floor of the Symphony Towers Building downtown. The view over the city was breathtaking. Dr. Hollmann, together with the sponsors for this meeting: Edward Cramp and Eberhard Roehm, both Partners, Duane Morris LLP, gave short introductions. It was announced that the German American San Diego Foundation was established and that they had worked on the tax and legal status of the foundation. The foundation has plans to build a German Campus which will mainly serve as a center for education. The campus will house a high school that will offer the German Abitur as well as an American high school diploma. Also planned are a business center, cultural installations, sporting facilities and a movie theatre. The prospective site will be part of the East Village Development. It will be on 42 acres of land and will cost approximately $ 42 million to build. A representative of the Balboa Park Centennial 2015 team presented some of their ideas for the up-coming festivities in 2015, including the planning of international festivals. All German groups are encouraged to propose exhibitions and other activities. Special events are planned for all 17 museums in the park. One of the plans is to host an economic forum to promote clean energy. SDGE will rewire the Spreckels Organ Pavillion; a zip-line crossing the park and a robotics soccer game to increase the interest for family activities are also considered. Advertisements for the Centennial will promote San Diego as a tourist destination. The audience suggested inviting celebrities like the President of the USA or of Germany.New House of Germany Website in Development: (by Chris Peter)We are pleased to announce that a new House of Germany website is being developed to replace our old website, HYPERLINK "" Our old website was designed many years ago and has become obsolete. Dan Shaw, son of House of Germany members Angela and Larry Shaw is working on the design of the new website. For that, we will solicit milestone photos and information from our members for inclusion in our new website. The new website will include a Calendar of Events, Membership Information and Application Form, and information on the Kinderwerkstatt, Kaffeeklatsch, Choir, Queen and Princess Activities, December Nights, Lawn Program, Newsletters and Archives, Contacts, and Links. In particular we need recent photos and written materials for the Queen and Princess Activities, Kaffeeklatsch, Lawn Program, and Holiday Nights. In addition we request that members submit suggestions for the Links section which consists of a directory of restaurants/delicatessens, organizations, and programs of interest to the German-American community in San Diego County as well as those interested in German culture. We selected some traditional songs along with songs from German composers. We think you will all like the program.First Lutheran Church: A German Service is offered on the last Sunday of every month at 3:00 pm at 1420 Third Ave. San Diego. We will be celebrating our 55th anniversary on February 23rd. The following service will be on March 30th. We gathered beforehand and then assumed our duties in our respective houses. It was fun meeting all the visitors and answering their questions. We will be performing ethnic dances and selling pastries.
