The Role of Director of Music MinistriesRedeemer Lutheran ChurchStatement of Purpose:For Lutherans, music has long been a means of strengthening faith in Christ and reaching out to a broader community with the message of the Gospel. Redeemer considers music to be vital in growing an engaged church. Redeemer is an unapologetically Lutheran church with a liturgical bent, which, as a Reconciling in Christ congregation, has a strong commitment to diversity. We are interested in a variety of styles that will utilize the gifts of our past to reach generations of the future. Our Music Director will lead and equip our congregation in our greater ministry through the means of music.Job Description:The Director of Music Ministries will lead and motivate the congregation, pastor, and lay leadership in building, renewing, and participating in worship and music ministries. The Director will manage the ongoing needs of the program and arrange for, lead, schedule, and manage choirs and special music as required. The Director is not responsible for doing all of the tasks of the worship and music ministry but is responsible for making sure they get done. Primary Job Responsibilities:Plan and supervise worship services and musical events, in consultation with the senior pastor.Ensure that musical leadership and accompaniment are provided for all public and special worship services, weddings and funerals, including, but not limited to:Recruiting and motivating volunteers,Delegating responsibility to musicians,Conducting rehearsals to support worship and special music experiences,Approving and scheduling substitutes for vacation or other absences, and Developing resources to provide choir or special music as needed.Enhance worship experiences on the major festivals of the church year through, but not limited to, the use of additional instrumentalists, vocalists, choir anthems, and different liturgies. Identify additional opportunities for enhancing worship throughout the year.Serve as the primary leader in the area of worship ministry. Supervise worship and music task forces and groups, including but not limited to:Worship & Music CommitteeFestival Choir (Adult Choir)Alleluia Ringers (Handbells)Children’s ChoirPraise BandOrganize and produce online worship services.Arrange for maintenance and upkeep of the organ, pianos, and other church instruments.Attend regular staff meetings.Keep regular office hours and update staff on schedule and where you can be reached. Encourage and motivate congregational participation in worship and music activities and programs.Report to and receive feedback from the senior pastor in the following areas:How worship and music ministries assist in achieving the congregation’s purpose and values; andProgress on achieving objectives approved by Council.Initiate long-range planning with the involvement of the senior pastor at least once a year to set the direction for worship and music in the future.Provide written reports as required by the senior pastor.Maintain the music library, including, but not limited to, arranging for all necessary copyright licenses or permissions for use of music.Perform music and worship related administration, including, but not limited to, creating and managing an annual budget, liturgical support, bulletin preparation, and Altar Guild supervision.Support the music needs of the church’s educational programs. i.e. Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Christmas Program, etc.Provide 30 days written notice of intent to terminate employment.Special Skills:Demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:perform as an organist for worship services and musical events.perform as a pianist for worship services and musical events.direct various music groups, including, but not limited to, adult choirs, youth choirs, handbells, contemporary worship bands, and instrumentalists.create and edit worship and music videos.promote the music program through the use of social media.work flexible hours to support seasonal activities.delegate tasks to and organize volunteer leaders to maintain existing ministries and develop new ministries.develop and arrange musical support for a variety of worship styles.possess written and verbal communication skills to motivate, teach, and blend people of various ages and skill sets.possess an understanding of the Evangelical Lutheran Worship or display a willingness to learn.Redeemer’s Instruments:Berghaus two manual, 24 stop, 30 rank, 1500 pipe tracker organ. Originally built in 1984 and refurbished in 2013.One full size grand, two baby grand, and two upright pianos.Four octaves of Schulmerich handbells and three octaves of handchimes.A full set of timpani drums.A drum pensation:The Director of Music Ministries position will be a full-time, salaried exempt ministry position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week. Health care benefits for the employee and contributions to a pension fund will also be provided. Annual compensation will be $45,000 - $60,000.Expectations for all Staff:Maintain and honor the purpose, vision, and values of the congregation.Recruit and train volunteers. Give significant authority to those with the ability to plan, implement, and lead specific ministry programs. A ministry area of the congregation can only grow if its leader is actively recruiting and training other volunteer leaders.Report to the senior pastor, or the pastor’s delegate, regularly on the progress made in achieving the goals set by the Council.Consult with the senior pastor once a year to define the goals he or she wants to accomplish during the coming year(s). The senior pastor may add to or delete from these goals.
