Little Dorrit

Sunday, 11 July 2010

The Dorrits make their triumphant departure from the Marshalsea. Mr Dorrit (Tom Courtenay) instructs Amy (Claire Foy) that her

friendship with Arthur (Matthew Macfadyen) is over. He wants to leave the past, and everyone in it, behind him.

Mr Dorrit wastes no time in employing a lady, Mrs General (Pam Ferris), to offer instruction in etiquette to his daughters. Mrs

General suggests that the family goes on a Grand Tour and, before they know it, the Dorrits have left the country.

The first person that the Dorrits encounter on their Grand Tour is Rigaud (Andy Serkis). He is travelling with the newly-wed

Gowans and much to Amy’s discomfort, he seems to take a special interest in her...

The Dorrits arrive in Venice, only to bump into Mrs Merdle (Amanda Redman) and Edmund Sparkler (Sebastian Armesto), who still

has eyes for Fanny (Emma Pierson).

Amy and Arthur strike up a correspondence and these letters, along with Amy’s growing friendship with Pet (Georgia King), are

what keep her going.

Fanny worries about the burgeoning affection between Mr Dorrit and Mrs General. The thought of having Mrs General as a

step-mother makes her want to pursue marriage to Edmund Sparkler.

Back in England, Arthur visits his mother only to find a stranger standing on her doorstep. The stranger in question is Rigaud,

just returned from Venice. Arthur realises immediately that Rigaud is a criminal, but what business does he have with Mrs

Clennam (Judy Parfitt)?

Mr Merdle (Anton Lesser) secures a position for Sparkler at the Circumlocution Office. Mrs Merdle is gleeful to have got her son

out of Fanny’s clutches. But is she rejoicing too soon?

Arthur receives a shock when Pancks (Eddie Marsan) shows him an official handbill detailing the disappearance of Rigaud, last

seen at the House of Clennam. It suggests that Mrs Clennam is suspected of Rigaud’s murder.

Greatest Cities Of The World With Griff Rhys Jones

Tuesday, 13 July 2010

This week Griff is in our neck of the woods as he visits Sydney, a city where people work to live and live fabulously well in

what Griff describes as “surely one of the most beautiful locations in the world”.

Sydney came into existence as a British penal colony scarcely 200 years ago and Griff asks if this may have given the city an

identity crisis.

Griff’s 24 hours in Sydney starts on one of the city’s beautiful beaches at five in the morning. He explains that before

Sydneysiders put on their business suits for the day, they like to put on their bathing suits and spend quality time on the

beach before work. These breakfast swims are also an opportunity for something else – sharks. Griff joins the team of Surf Watch

in their helicopter as they scan the sea for potential danger. Then they spot a great white and a swimmer heading straight for

it...

Jennifer Byrne Presents: Christopher Hitchens

Tuesday, 13 July 2010

Jennifer Byrne Presents is a series of individual treats for lovers of books and writing. A panel of leading authors and expert

celebrity guests join Jennifer for investigations into some of the most popular reading genres: they reveal the conventions,

controversies, and titles that have helped shaped the literary landscape.

In this episode, Jennifer talks to #1 New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award finalist, Christopher Hitchens -

one of the most admired and controversial public intellectuals of our time.

Over the last thirty years Christopher Hitchens has established himself as one of the world's most influential public

intellectuals. His originality, bravery, range and wit made him first a leading iconoclast of the political Left, and then later

a formidable advocate of secular liberalism. As a socialist he opposed the war in Vietnam. After September 11 he emerged as one

of the fiercest advocates of war in Iraq.

Hitchens has recently released his long-awaited and candid memoir, Hitch 22, in which he re-traces the footsteps of his life to

date, from his childhood in Portsmouth with his adoring, tragic mother and reserved Naval officer father; to his life in

Washington DC, the base from which he would launch fierce attacks on tyranny of all kinds.

Along the way, he recalls the girls, boys and booze; the friendships and the feuds; the grand struggles and lost causes; and the

mistakes and misgivings that have characterised his life.

Grand Designs Revisited: Peterborough

Thursday, 15 July 2010

John and Terri Westlake never intended to self-build. They were looking to buy a house near Peterborough, in the county of

Cambridgeshire, when they came across a tumbledown cottage backing onto woodland, with great views across open countryside.

They immediately fell in love with the location, despite the cottage being ill-suited to their needs as a family, so they

decided to knock it down and in its place build a contemporary wooden box, with one wall entirely of glass to take advantage of

the fantastic views.

But John and Terri had a problem – having bought the land, they didn’t have enough money to build the house, so they decided to

take a huge risk and borrow against the value of the finished house. In addition, they would live on next to nothing, pouring

all their precious earnings into the build.

Due to the usual delays, the build took five months longer than they had hoped, and just as they were about to finally move into

their modest box of a home, Terri discovered she was pregnant. Lovely as the house was, it was not going to be big enough.

Five years on, Kevin McCloud goes back to visit the Westlakes and discovers they have expanded the house. Their clever extension

has transformed their rigid wooden box into a flexible living space and provides more than enough space for the family.

Written and presented by Kevin McCloud. Executive Producer: Charlie Bunce. Series Producers: Fiona Caldwell and Madeline Hall.

Miracles: Miracle In The Jungle

Thursday, 15 July 2010 Final

Forty-year-old Australian backpacker Hayden Adcock went missing in August, 2008 during one of South-East Asia’s most deadly

monsoon seasons.

Lost in the Laotian jungle, at the mercy of the violent storms, his body became consumed by creeping infections, hypothermia and

blood poisoning. But eleven days later, as a miraculous chain of events fell into place, Hayden (Paul Gleeson) was found barely

alive, lying at the top of a waterfall.

Using actual rescue footage never seen until now, exclusive interviews and high quality dramatic recreations Miracle In The

Jungle is a compelling story of persistence in the face of death and where an amazing string of coincidences led to eventual

rescue.

Hayden Adcock grew up on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. At the time of his jungle adventure he had just completed a six-month

stint teaching English in Hanoi. A keen traveller and experienced bushwalker, he decided to return home on an adventure through

South-East Asia.

Laos was a fresh challenge and new territory to conquer. But when Hayden failed to return from a solo trek in the Laotian

jungle, and four days of ground searches by local rangers and residents – in horrific conditions – failed to locate him, Hayden

was pronounced missing – presumed dead.

When tropical storm Kammuri hit SE-Asia, more than 120 people were confirmed dead after the storm caused flash floods and

landslides that cut off towns and villages. The storm destroyed more than 300 homes, damaged over 3,500 others, and caused

damage estimated at over $US120 million.

While conducting interviews with Hayden’s family it became clear the heroism of the local villagers was a key part of Hayden’s

survival. The bravery and tenacity of the people of Ban Khoun Kham village ensured Hayden came out of the jungle alive.

The Volcano That Stopped The World

Thursday, 15 July 2010

In April 2010 an eruption from a volcano in Iceland paralysed air travel across Europe. As a cloud of volcanic ash drifted over

the continent it created the biggest ‘no fly’ zone ever known.

But in the chaos, one British geologist made it to the heart of the eruption zone. Professor Nick Petford went to explore the

science behind the crisis.

Following the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano, The Volcano That Stopped The World explores the untold geological

and scientific background behind the headlines of this extraordinary story.

This one-hour program explores the dangers posed by the ash and the effects that it has on aircraft and aviation, as well as

exploring the impacts of further possible eruptions to the UK, Europe and the world.

Can We Help?

Friday, 16 July 2010

In the early 1970s single mother of three Denise Fechner fell pregnant unexpectedly. Very reluctantly she gave up her fourth

child for adoption and has since spent her life thinking about the daughter she never got to know. Denise approached Can We

Help? to take up the search for her daughter after her own attempts had failed. Confronting her fears of possible rejection,

this is a bold journey for Denise, but luckily she has the love and support of her other children to encourage her along the

way. They too would very much like to meet their sister.

Also in the program we hit the streets for a new segment called Have You Been Helped? where regular passers-by get to tell their

personal stories of help.

We meet another dedicated Helper who coaches a street soccer team in Perth. While the World Cup might be captivating people’s

attention across the country, at the same time an unlikely group of athletes are putting in heaps of training to try and make it

to this year’s International Homeless World Cup to be held in Brazil in September. The program is run by The Big Issue magazine

and uses sport to help transform the lives of disadvantaged members of the community and bring about social change.

Finally we have a double helping of Kate Burridge and her Wise Words. This week she talks ‘Double Dutch’ and helps a primary

school teacher and her students work out the correct use of ‘us’ words like cactus, platypus and so on.

Talking Heads: Neil Balnaves

This week on Talking Heads Peter Thompson’s guest is the man who brought us some of Australia’s most watched television programs... then walked away from the industry.

Neil Balnaves set up the Southern Star Group in the mid-seventies. Its early productions - Blue Heelers, Water Rats, The Secret Life of Us and Blue Murder – were hugely successful. And the joint venture forged by Neil which brought Big Brother, Strictly Dancing and Deal or No Deal to our screens meant more success and more money in the coffers.

Under Neil’s chairmanship Southern Star became Australia’s largest independent producer and distributor of Australian TV programs.

But at the height of his career, in 2002, Neil had a serious boating accident on the Gold Coast and was on life support for several weeks. He was border-line conscious for several months and bedridden for even longer. It gave him plenty of time for reflection.

After talking things over with his family Neil Balnaves decided to quit the media industry, give away a large portion of his fortune and redirect his time and efforts.

He set up the Balnaves Foundation with an endowment of 34-million dollars and a mission to provide grants for medical research and the arts in Australia.

Poh's Kitchen

This week on Poh’s Malaysian adventure, she heads north to the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, the island of Penang. A popular tourist destination, this tropical paradise has a diverse cultural background, which is clearly reflected in its reputation as the food capital of Malaysia.

As Poh discovers, Penang is a food lover’s paradise and boasts some of the best and cheapest street fare in Asia. Many Malaysians holiday here just to sample its unique cuisine. When it comes to choice, there’s almost too much. On nearly every street corner, you can see a mix of Malay, Chinese, Nonya and Indian influences, a feast for any culinary eye.

To help her on her journey Poh meets up again with Malaysian chefs Florence Tan and Ismail Ahmad, who have offered to be her culinary guides. With them she explores and cooks some of the ingredients and dishes that make Penang so special.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, July 15 at 6:00pm

Catalyst

Meditation

A spiritual guru called Maharishi Mahesh Yogi made the art of Transcendental Meditation famous in the 60s. Many celebrities flocked to him, including the Beatles and Mia Farrow, making the Eastern practice popular in the West. However, some of the claims made about this type of meditation caused controversy and in the 80s the movement lost traction. More recently it is starting to attract more attention. While sceptics continue to dismiss TM as quasi-religious nonsense, its advocates insist that this particular form of meditation can enhance wellbeing. Dr Maryanne Demasi examines the science to find out if Transcendental Meditation really does offer health benefits.

Entropy

The universe will eventually end - according to astrophysicists it is destined to simply fade away to absolute nothingness. And it’s all due to an increase in entropy! In short, the process involves the cosmos becoming ever more disordered. Fortunately, the journey to our demise should at least be a nice long one. But new research suggests, not as long as previously thought! Graham Phillips visits Charley Lineweaver, Professor at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Australian National University in Canberra to find out more.

Jiggly Eyes

Robert Darwin, father of Charles, provided the first empirical evidence that our eyes are never completely still, but produce tiny involuntary motions even when we try to fix our gaze. But why should our eyes have evolved to constantly make these movements? Jonica Newby looks deeply into a frog’s eyes, and visits neurophysiologists in Phoenix Arizona to find the explanation.

Fundamentals with Bernie Hobbs – Burn Baby Burn

It’s not a question we ask ourselves daily, but Bernie Hobbs would like to know why human beings don’t burst into flames when we burn energy. It’s all a matter of maintaining a slow burn with enzymes.
