Directions for Transferring Files onto a Website:

1) Create a folder (PENN Website) where you can place all HTML files, jpeg, and other files you want to transfer to your website.

2) Open the file you want to move and re-save it by clicking the file button and choosing the “save as”. Once the “save as” is opened, go to the top where it states save in: and choose your folder (PENN Website). Remember to name your file and then click save

3) The other way is to find your file, right click the file, and choose copy. Next open your folder (PENN website) that you will be transferring to your website. Next right click the mouse and choose paste. Your file should now appear in your folder.

4) Now the file is in your folder (PENN website) and is ready to be placed on the internet.

5) To place it on the internet:

a. Open Filezilla by using a shortcut on your desktop or clicking on start, all programs, going over to Filezilla and clicking the link

6) Next you need to sign onto Filezilla by:

a. Entering the address (mail.sas.upenn.edu), user (mabruder), password (XXXX) and port (22).

b. Once that information is entered, click the quickconnect

c. If you are using your own computer, this information is stored. So to login click “open the site manager” tab which in the upper right and the icon looks like a small computer.

d. Once you click the icon, you will see a folder that says “My FTP sites”. Click the site that you named (mabruder@sas.upenn.edu)

e. You should now be connected to Filezilla

7) If you have never signed onto Filezilla you need to create an account by:

a. Choosing the file menu and select site manager

b. Now chose the new site manager

c. Enter in a name for your new site (mabruder@sas.upenn.edu)

d. For the Host enter (mail.sas.upenn.edu), Port (22), Servertype (SFTP using SSH2), Logontype (normal), and User [use pennkey name] (mabruder). Make sure the don’t save password box is UNCHECKED

e. Click “Save and Exit”

f. Then follow instructions 6c and 6d. Make sure to enter your password (XXXX) when prompted. Entering your password will be a one-time thing and the program will now remember the password.

8) Now to transfer files:

a. Now locate the file (PENN website) on the left hand side that has the files you want to transfer. Do this by clicking C: then where the main file is saved (example: my desktop, my documents or anywhere else). Find the folder, double click the folder (PENN website) and your files should open.

b. On the right hand side under Remote Site will be file names. Double click on the HTML file which should open. You need to open this file before transferring files.

c. To transfer the file from your folder (PENN website) to the HTML folder, double click the file you want to move. It should now appear on the right side in the HTML folder.

d. For your file to appear on the website you need to change to File attributes

1. Right click the file you want to appear

2. Click on file attributes

3. Change the numeric value from 600 to 755

4. Click okay

e. You are now ready to post documents, photos and anything else on your website

How to Drop a File in the Digital Dropbox on Blackboard:

1) Go to:

2) Click PennKey Login

3) Enter your PennKey (mabruder) and Password (XXXX), then click login

4) On the right side of the page click: CHEM502-931-2007B. INFO TECHNOLOGY IN CHEM

5) Now the course webpage is opened

6) Click on the red tab labeled “dropbox” on the left side of the page.

7) You have two choices: Add File or Send File

a. If you want to upload your document without sending it, Click Add File

b. Now enter your name

c. Next chose the browse button to find the file you wish to upload

d. Find the file on your computer (Desktop, My Documents, and PENN Website) then double click the file you wish to add.

e. Add any comments you wish the professor to read.

f. Finally click submit (this will only bring your file into the dropbox)

8) If you want to Send the File

a. Click the tab Send File

b. You can select the file which you have already uploaded or you can also browse for a file (follow directions from 7c to 7e).

c. Select the file you wish to send to your professor

d. Click the send button

e. You will receive an instant message telling you the file was now sent to your professor.
