1 WS_FTP

File Transfer Protocol (better known as ‘FTP’) is a process used to transfer files between the hard drive on your PC and a remote server (e.g. Internet, web address, or mainframe computer). For computers running Windows, FTP can be accomplished using a file transfer program called WS_FTP.

Moving files from your hard drive to a remote server is called uploading. Moving files from a remote server to your hard drive is called downloading; both processes can be accomplished with WS_FTP. WS_FTP use allows files to go directly to your hard drive. It allows for a one step file transfer process.

1.1 Getting Started

WS_FTP LE is a free, limited edition version of WS_FTP for educational users, government employees or non-business home users.

The software can be downloaded from many different places on the Internet. A search of ‘WS_FTP LE’ will produce many, many sites. or are two such sites available to download a free version of WS_FTP LE

Save the download to your DESKTOP, once downloaded go to the ftp.exe icon on your desktop and click to install. Follow the on-screen instructions and install the program to your Hard Drive (C Drive) in the ‘PROGRAM FILES’ folder. (Program manager = ws_ftp). You should receive a message that the program was successfully installed.

1.1.1 Opening a Connection

When you open up WS_FTP LE you are taken to the Session Properties Window. This is where you select or create a site to connect to. The General Tab is the first tab open. You will see the following, which you will need to populate in order make your connection: Profile Name, Host Name/Address, User ID and Password.

Profile Name: Think of this as a nickname of sorts. It can be anything you like that should help you identify the purpose of the connection.

Host Name/Address: This is the address of the FTP site you need to connect to.

• cumvsc.ais.columbia.edu - This Host Name/Address will be used for transferring files to Production.

• cuvmc.ais.columbia.edu - This is the Host Name/Address used for transferring files to your CMS File List

Host Type: Specific to the Host Name/Address.

• For cumvsc.ais.columbia.edu Host Name/Address always use IBM MVS as the Host Type.

• For cuvmc.ais.columbia.edu Host Name/Address always use IBM VM as the Host Type

User ID: This is your AIS ID

Password: This is your AIS password. You may choose to save your password in the FTP session by clicking the Save PWD box. If you choose to save your password remember to update the password in FTP when you have updated it in AIS or you will receive an error message the next time you connect with your old password.

After setting the General Tab, you should also set up the Startup tab. In the Startup tab you will set the Initial Remote Site Folder and the Initial Local Folder.

Initial Remote Site Folder: The default file location on the Remote Site that should be accessed each time you connect using the current Profile. It is the destination site to which you will send files to a data source. To cut down on changing the directory every time you connect to a remote server, enter the name of the data source to which you will send files during this session. The name of the data source must be inside of single quotes.

Ex: ‘vs.issregpx.ad.mde.jnadweb.’

Initial Local Folder: The startup folder on your PC. This folder will be opened on the Local System upon logging into a Session. This should be the folder where you have the files that need to be transferred during the Session. Ex: c:\applyyourself\export

Once your settings are entered click on the ‘Apply’ button, then on the ‘OK’ button. You should now be connected to your FTP Session. The box below is called the Transfer Dialog Box. The transfer dialog box in WS-FTP lists the Local PC directory and the connected Remote System Directory. Files of the selected directory are also displayed.

Now that your Session has been created and opened, you must click on the OPTIONS button at the bottom of Transfer Dialog Box. Click on the Sessions (cont’d) tab. Check the ‘Prompt for Destination File Names’ box and set your Startup Transfer Mode as ASCII. Click on the ‘Set as default’ button, and click ‘OK’.

1.1.2 Basic WS_FTP Commands

• Click on a directory name and use the ChgDir button to open other directories and see file listings

• Scroll up and down the listing by pulling the scroll bar up and down for that listing

• VERY IMPORTANT: You must transfer your data files in ASCII format or the program will not be able to correctly process your files. (This should be set up as a default in your Options tab at the bottom of the Transfer Dialog Box in the Sessions (cont’d) tab as directed above.

• Click once on a file to select it for transfer

• Click on the left arrow (to move the selected files to the Local System

1.1.3 Transferring Files

Once you have setup your Session in FTP and verified that the Local System and Remote Site are correct, you are ready to transfer files. Always verify that the Transfer Format is ASCII.

Transferring files is just another way of describing the copying of files from one place to another. With FTP file transfer you can take files from your Local System and place a copy of them into another folder on the Remote Site or vice versa.

To transfer a file from your Local System to a Remote Site, click on the file in your local system and then click on the right arrow to transfer the file to the current remote site system folder. Since we have set up the Options-Session tab in a previous step and checked off the ‘Prompt for destination file name’ box, you will be asked to give the file you are transferring a new name. Just type in a name for the file and click ‘OK’. This will complete your transfer of the file to the Remote Site folder. To transfer from the remote site, click on the file and then click on the left arrow to complete the transfer of the file to the Local Site folder.
