Ch 9: Quadratics

Ch 9:  Quadratics

Standards:  1d, 2d, 5a, 5b, 5c

Pacing:  Approx. 20 days

9-1:  Identifying Quadratic Functions 2 days -b/2a out of place

            -Lesson is pretty basic.

            -Good Exploration

9-2:  Characteristics of Quadratic Functions 3 days

-Begin with Reaching All Learners on p. 600

-9-2 Algebra Lab, p. 598, is a good warm-up for the lesson, but it is optional

            -Skip the Exploration

-Think and Discuss, p. 603, is good

-9-2 Challenge is really good, but is likely only for the accelerated kids

Quiz on 9-1 & 9-2 be sure they can graph by hand before they use calculators

9-3:  Graphing Quadratic Functions 2 days

-Will take two days of class and could be broken into Day 1 – Graphing & Day – 2 Problem Solving

-Practice B worksheet is good for an assignment

9-4:  Transforming Quadratic Functions 3 days use calculators to enhance

-9-4 Tech Lab, p. 612, and Exploration are very good (use of graphing calculator) and pretty much covers everything in the whole lesson (except Ex. 3)

-Think and Discuss, p. 616, is very good.  Graphic organizer is a good way to summarize the transformations.

9-5:  Solving Quadratic Equations by Graphing

            Skip this lesson

Quiz on 9-3 to 9-4

9-6:  Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring 3 days

-Introduce Standard Form of a Quadratic Equation

-Exploration is good (can have them hand-graph it or use the graphing calculator)

9-7:  Solving Quadratic Equations by Using Square Roots 2 days

            -Exploration is excellent

-Approach from a very basic level

9-6 to 9-7 Quiz

p. 643 Geometry Connection – Distance Formula – SKIP THIS

9-8:  Algebra Lab – Model of Completing the Square with tiles – do it if you want to 5 days

9-8:  Completing the Square

-Begin the lesson with the Exploration & Motivate (p. 645)

-Think and Discuss, p. 648, has a really good graphic organizer (see p. A8 to show how it should look)

9-9:  The Quadratic Formula and the Discriminate

-Exploration is good, but may want to do it after walking through the proof on p. 652 and giving the quadratic formula

-Motivate, p. 652, shows that solutions are not always integers and that the Quadratic Formula can always be used to find exact solutions

-Good summary of Methods to Solve Quadratic Equations on p. 656

-Good graphic organizer on Reading Strategies worksheet
