Sample Opening Email to Clients in Mediation Using

This is a sample of the opening email to clients in a divorce. In paternity cases, we substitute for and “Mediate with PTP” for “Mediate with UTP” in the second paragraph.

It takes only about 10 minutes of introductory telephone contact and email preparation to launch many hours of child-focused preparation by the parents.

Dear [parents’ first names]:

Thank you for the brief introductory conversations about your circumstances. I look forward to working with you in your efforts to find solutions good for you and [your child/your children/name of child/names of children].

I want to emphasize that good preparation, including in focusing on children’s needs, is often a strong predictor of success at mediation. Therefore, please do an excellent job on the three steps laid out in the “Mediate with UTP” link of :

1. Do an excellent job on that website, including the four written Exercises.

2. Fill out the Intake found on the link in “Mediate with UTP.” Please save that Intake on your computer and email it to me. To avoid losing any work, it’s a good idea to start by saving the Intake to your computer with you name to identify it (e.g., RobertJonesMediationIntake). Remember to save your work on the Intake every time you work on it.

3. Email your Intake to me within one week from today.

[Insert any other necessary messages about fees, appointment times, and other work you wish the parents to do before mediation. We believe that the days approaching mediation should be used for work in vital co-parenting education. The additional work can include (1) asking parents to look over the Quick Help for Families in Transition found on the website or (2) any other work you prefer.]

I very much look forward to hearing your ideas for helping yourselves and [your child/your children/name of child/names of children].

Cordially,

Charlie Asher
