Making a Gif using Jasc Paint Shop Pro

Making a Gif using Jasc Paint Shop Pro

with Animation Wizard Program (which should be part of Paint Shop)

Tutorial

by Blue Spirit Gal (with lots of help for Lil)

Ok first off this tutorial is REALLY basic guys for making an animated gif. I’m not an expert and I’m sure a really good gif maker could make it prettier and much more detailed than what I can show you. But it will get you started on the right path to making gifs.

I’m sure there are other programs out there for gif making, but I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro Version 8.0, so the tutorial is based off this program. As with any program I’m sure there might be some variations to the instructions depending on what you version you have. If you don’t have Paint Shop Pro, you can buy it or you may be able to google search a free trial download.

I also don’t own any part of Avatar the Last Airbenders which belong to it’s creators, Nicklodeon and its parent company. My intention in providing the tutorial is to give some basic instructions in gif making, not to violate any copyrights.

With that said, let’s get started.

|First Open Paint Shop Pro. |[pic] |

|Click on “File” and “Open” |[pic] |

|From your saved files select the images |[pic] |

|you want to use to make your gif. |In this example I’m using two screen caps I have already save on my computer as a jpeg compliant file|

| |to create a two image gif which will make Aang smile. (compliments of |

| |) |

|If you would like to follow along, right|[pic] |

|click and save these two screen shots | |

|onto your computer as a jpeg compliant |[pic] |

|file. | |

| | |

|(For this example I already reduced them| |

|from their original size just to make it| |

|a little easier to follow) | |

|Before you can make these images into a |[pic] |

|gif, you first need to “Export” them | |

| | |

|To export your jpeg image click “File”, | |

|then “Export” and select | |

|“JPEG-Optimizer” | |

|Click OK | |

| |[pic] |

| | |

|Save it back to your file. | |

| |[pic] |

|You may want to keep you original | |

|unchanged so just add a little edition | |

|like an “a” to your image file name so | |

|it will save as a new image and not | |

|replace the original. | |

| | |

|It will also make it easier to find the | |

|right saved exported files when we need | |

|to retrieve them in a little bit. | |

| | |

|Repeat this step for each image you | |

|intend to use for the gif. | |

|Once you have exported and saved the |[pic] |

|images, you are now ready to launch the | |

|animation program which will actually | |

|make your gif | |

| | |

|Click on “File”, then “Jasc Software | |

|Products” then “Launch Animation Shop” | |

| | |

|Once Animation Shop is open click on |[pic] |

|“Animation Wizard” | |

|This will open the window that will |[pic] |

|start the menu to define what you want | |

|your gif to look like | |

| | |

|In our example, I want to make my gif | |

|150 pixels wide by 100 pixels high | |

| | |

|It’s best to keep gifs relatively small.| |

|Large gifs will take a long time to | |

|load. | |

| | |

|Typically a 50x50 or 100x100 or 150x100 | |

|is adequate | |

| | |

|Once you decide your size, click next | |

|and continue to follow the prompts. | |

|The next window is basically asking what|[pic] |

|do you want your background to be? | |

| | |

|If you were making a gif with a | |

|transparent background like a smilie, | |

|you would choose transparent. | |

| | |

|Otherwise select opaque. The opaque | |

|feature will fill in the background with| |

|the color you pick (from the rectangle | |

|box) if your original image happens to | |

|be smaller than the specified size of | |

|the gif. | |

| | |

|Click “Next” | |

|Continue to follow the prompts about |[pic] |

|where the image will be located | |

| | |

|Best option is just to select centered | |

|in the frame | |

| | |

|And | |

| | |

|If your image only occupies part of the | |

|frame, to have the rest filled with the | |

|background (canvas) color you choose | |

|before. | |

| | |

|Because our current images are much | |

|bigger than 150x100, we also need to | |

|check “Scale frames to fit” | |

| | |

|Click “Next” | |

|For Gifs, check “Yes” to have your gif |[pic] |

|repeat automatically | |

| | |

|The second part of this window is asking| |

|you how fast you want the frames to run.| |

|For now just set it for 80. | |

| | |

|I will show you how to make an | |

|adjustment to the speed a little later | |

| | |

|Click “Next” | |

|Next you will need to retrieve those |[pic] |

|JPEG-Optimizer images you exported and | |

|saved a little bit ago in the order you | |

|want your gif to appear. | |

| | |

|To do this click “Add Image” and start | |

|to add each on to the menu | |

| | |

|*remember to pick the ones you had | |

|exported* | |

| | |

|In my example I had identified them with| |

|an “a” at the end of each image. | |

| | |

|When you have all your images listed in | |

|the order you want, click “Next” | |

| | |

|And in the next window click “Finish” | |

|What will come up after the animation |[pic] |

|shop has processed your request is a row| |

|containing all your images. | |

| | |

|To view the animated gif |[pic] |

|Click “View”, then | |

|“Animation” | |

| | |

|An Animation window will appear and will|[pic] |

|show you the gif in motion. | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

|Want to change the speed? | |

| | |

|There are two ways. You can either | |

|change the speed of a single frame at a | |

|time, OR the entire gif. | |

|To change the speed of a single frame. |[pic] |

| | |

|First close your animation window so | |

|just the row of single images is | |

|showing. | |

| | |

|Next click on the frame you want to | |

|change. The frame will be highlighted. | |

| | |

|Next “right click” your mouse and select| |

|“Frame Properties” | |

|This will take you back to the window |[pic] |

|where you can adjust the speed. | |

| | |

|You may need to play with this a little | |

|to get the right speed. | |

| | |

|In general the smaller the number the | |

|faster the image will cycle. | |

| | |

|Using this option can create a nice | |

|pause in your gif, or speed up a | |

|sequence. | |

| | |

|Click “OK” when done and it brings you | |

|back to just the image strip. View the | |

|changes again by clicking “View” the | |

|“Animation” | |

|But what if you want to change the speed|[pic] |

|of the WHOLE gif at once. | |

| | |

|To do this, click on one of the images | |

|on your strip, and “Crtl+a” (on your | |

|keyboard – the Crtl+a essentially means | |

|select all) This will highlight the | |

|whole strip. | |

| | |

|“Right click” your mouse, select “Frame | |

|Properties” and the Display Time Window | |

|this time will adjust each frame of the | |

|entire gif. | |

|Once you have your image to the speed |[pic] |

|you want you still need to save it as a | |

|gif. | |

| | |

|To do this, click “File” then “Save As” | |

| | |

|Label your gif | |

| | |

|The file type will be CompuServe Graphic| |

|Interchange (*.gif) | |

| | |

|(the name may be a little different on | |

|other programs, I’m not sure) | |

| | |

|Click “Save” | |

|Follow the prompts until you reach and |[pic] |

|then click “Finish” | |

| | |

|Your gif is now saved. | |

| | |

|When viewing your gif from your files it| |

|will still look like a still image until| |

|it’s open. | |

| | |

|You can know add the gif to your site or| |

|upload it to a photoserver to share with| |

|friends. | |

|If you want to share your gif on Blue |[pic] |

|Spirit Gal’s Forum, I recommend | |

|uploading it first to photobucket or | |

|another photoserver. | |

| | |

|Once uploaded, photobucket will give you| |

|an [IMG] gif [IMG] code you can copy and| |

|past onto the forum | |

Okay that’s about it. Hope the tutorial was some help!
