Then describe one notable milestone from 2019 that your chapter is proud to share and one challenge that it faced this year. Please limit to 300 words.]The Sample Univ. Chapter was established in February 2016 and is part of the Sample Univ. Optics Alliance, which includes student members from SPIE, OSA, and IEEE. We hold quarterly meetings and most activities on the main campus of Sample Univ. The purpose of the Sample Univ. Chapter is to support optics students by providing valuable academic resources, facilitating career development through networking opportunities, and representing the study of light to the public. This year, our chapter organized a company visit to Sample Optics in September. We took a lab tour and had lunch with several of their lead engineers. After our visit, one of our chapter members applied for an open position and will be starting next year as a research engineer! One of the biggest challenges that our chapter faced this year has been succession planning. Many of the 2018 - 2019 officers graduated in May 2019. We have worked hard to ensure that the new 2019 - 2020 officers range in level of study so that future officers will have better continuity of leadership training. Also, one of our 2018 – 2019 officers was elected as the 2019 - 2020 Chapter Mentor and will be assisting with transferring knowledge to the next set of officers even after graduation.Contact Information: [List the main contact for your chapter. In most cases, this will be the advisor or a special chapter email address. If your chapter has a special website or it’s own social media accounts, please include links to those here as well.]For general questions about our chapter, please email our chapter advisor, Lin Sun, at Lin.Sun123@sample.edu. Ask permission before posting emails here.]At the time of this report, there are 17 student members affiliated to the Sample Univ. Chapter and there are currently about 50 students involved in the Sample Univ. Optics Alliance. Below is a sample of how to list an activity in your report. No need to write really long descriptions. A few short lines about the activity and a photo works great. Think about what would be useful for future organizers to know about the event such as feedback, things that could be improved upon or done differently. Make sure that you are capturing all of your activities here. If you have a recurring event like a journal club or speaker forum, feel free to adapt this formatting to fit your needs. The important thing here is that it is a format that works well for you to communicate your events effectively. Some chapters with many events, may choose to organize them by type (academic, social, professional development, industry-related, and outreach). Other chapters may choose to organize this section simply chronologically.]Title of Event/ActivityOrganizer (if applicable)Speaker (if applicable)Date/Time/LocationParticipantsCostDescription [Photo(s)]//Repeat for all activities.//Leveraging your LinkedIn Profile WorkshopOrganizer: Jane Doe, Communications ChairSpeaker: Dr. Sudip Ramanujan, Communications Professor at Sample Univ. Date/Time/Location: April 2, 2019 from 4-5 pm in the Wilson Building, Room 203Participants: 21 students (They were mostly graduates and PhD. 5 people from outside our chapter.)Cost: $60 (For snacks and refreshments.)This was our first professional development workshop hosted by the Sample Univ. SPIE Student Chapter and it was a success! Dr. Ramanujan presented on how to leverage LinkedIn while a student so that you are better suited for positions after graduation. Students were encouraged to bring their laptops and work on each other’s profiles during the workshop. We received positive feedback from participants, and many would like to see us hold a similar professional development workshop on presentation skills in the future. //Next activity. //Treasurer’s Report[This section should be completed by the chapter treasurer and based off of accounting done throughout the year. Things that are necessary include a starting balance, any income in the year with descriptions, any expenses during the year with descriptions, and an ending balance. Table formats work best. You may choose to track expenses in Excel in order to use formula functions. Preference is in chronological order of expense. Please adapt format to meet your chapter’s needs. Below is an example of the minimum requirements. If your chapter tracks expenses in local currency, please include a column for USD conversions using the date of reporting as the date of conversion. If your chapter has anticipated expenses that will occur after the report is submitted, indicate the anticipated amounts here.]DateDescriptionNotesCredit (Income)Debit (Expenses)Total1/1/2019Previous Year’s Funds$Everything in Between $12/31/2019Anticipated End of Year Balance$DateDescriptionNotesCredit (Income)Debit (Expenses)Total1/1/2019Previous Year’s Funds$5203/1/2019SPIE Activity Grant$500$10204/2/2019Leveraging Your LinkedIn Profile WorkshopSnacks$60$9605/10/2019Affiliates Days Poster SessionPizza$105$8559/15/2019Back to Class BBQ SocialFood and rental of courtyard$233$6229/27/2019Trip to Sample Optics CompanyTransportation and dinner$120$50210/4/2019Visiting Lecturer Pizza$112$39010/30/2019Open Lab Day/Sample Highschool OutreachOutreach project materials and snacks.$197$19311/15/2019Student Presentations Snacks and promotional costs$75$118*12/15/2019Annual Cookie PartyNapkins, coffee, tea$30$8812/31/2019Anticipated End of Year Balance$88*Anticipated funding amounts based on chapter budget and last year’s costs/incomes.Conclusions and Recommendations[This is your opportunity to pass on any conclusions that you feel were missed in the rest of the report or it may be a place to pass on specific knowledge about an event that you want future leaders to know about.]This year, our chapter branched out and was able to communicate better with other departments. We look forward to holding another professional development workshop next spring on presentations skills and inviting other students to join us. Bringing on a communications officer helped us post our events on social media. We found that having a group for the chapter was more effective than having a page on Facebook. The contact at Sample Optics Company, Jennifer Ratlin (Jennifer.ratlin123@) said that he would like to invite us out for another visit in 2020, but he wanted to try for the spring since they are hiring for their internship program then. We recommend holding the visit in the spring. ................
