Patient Illness: Declining Treatment

Policy: It is the policy of maXum Therapy that any patient can be declined treatment based on illness at the discretion of the treating therapist when in conjunction with the following procedure to ensure the prevention of spreading illness to other patients and staff while providing services.

**Each child must be well enough to attend and participate during treatment. It is the parent’s responsibility to verify that their child’s health is adequate for participation during treatment before bringing the child to therapy each day. Should parents observe any of the following symptoms, parents are required to adhere to the following guidelines regarding keeping the child at home.

Symptom: Child Must Remain Home Until:

Fever of 100.4 or above Temperature is normal for 24 hours

Cold/Flu Thick yellow/green discharge is no longer

draining from the nose and continual coughing has subsided

Diarrhea / Vomiting Loose stools and vomiting have subsided

Red, watery eyes Eyes are no longer red, burning or itching

Rash Rash must disappear or has been determined by a

Physician as a non-communicable disease

Procedure:

1. At the initial evaluation parents are given the patient illness: declining treatment policy. They are also instructed to read and sign a cancellation policy that provides advance notice of illness or cancellation of appointment before 2pm the day prior.

2. The following symptoms if observed by the treating therapy staff are considered acceptable reasons to decline treatment services and are not limited to: fever, vomiting, diarrhea, conjunctivitis (pink eye), respiratory congestion compromising breathing, persistent coughing, persistent crying/irritability, lethargy, or if the child is unable to participate during routine treatment.

3. Treating therapy staff will determine the need to decline treatment services based on each individual patient’s presenting symptoms along with parent reports of symptoms.

4. The treating therapy staff will discuss with the parent the reason for declining treatment services.

5. Status of future appointments will be reviewed by the treating therapy staff and discussed with the parent. The therapist has the right to cancel appointments as deemed necessary until the patient is symptom free for a period of 24 hours.
