Today in our Bible lesson we are going to be talking about conquering.

Bible Lesson:

Review: Let’s review what has happened up to this point in the book of Joshua:

1. Joshua is the new leader of Israel

2. God encourages Joshua and tells him to keep his focus on Him and His Word

3. God has the Jordan River part and let’s the people cross on dry land

4. Joshua and the nation of Israel obeyed God by being circumcised

5. God gives the Israelites victory over Jericho by marching around it seven times and yelling and the walls fall down

6. Achan sins and Israel is defeated by Ai

7. Israel repents and God gives them victory over Ai

8. Joshua and Israel are tricked by Gibeonites and make a peace treaty

9. Israel and Joshua defeat five kings and the sun stands still

We need to remember that the book of Joshua is history; the history of the Israelite nation. We will see in the upcoming chapters how the land is divided and the many details given in the book of Joshua explaining the dividing up of the land.

Biblical Study of being a “conqueror”

In Joshua we are told that Joshua conquered all the lands….but we are also told the “Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.” Joshua was called a “conqueror” but it was because the Lord was on his side.

√ Do you ever feel like a conqueror?

√ What does it mean for us to have God on our side?

Let’s look at the New Testament to see what it says about being a conqueror.

Romans 8:37: “Yet through all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

√ What kind of “things” is Paul talking about here?

Look at the verse right above, Romans 8:35, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword.”

Paul is talking about some hard “things:”

1. tribulation = hard times in our lives

2. distress – hard situations in our life that upset us

3. persecution = being hurt or put down for what you believe about God

4. famine = going without food

5. nakedness = not having clothing

6. peril or sword = being put to death

These are definitely hard things…and many of these we will never experience in America. But we do experience hard things in our lives.

√ What are some hard things we could face? (have the kids name some things)

Some people think that when we become a Christian and know Jesus Christ as our Savior; that bad things will not happen to us.

√ Do you think that is true? Why or why not?

√ How are we conquerors in these things? Through God! Joshua fought his battles and was victorious not because he was an amazing warrior, but because God was on his side. God gave them the victory in every battle.

√ Do you believe that God is on your side?

√ Why do we doubt God when something bad happens to us?

Romans 8:37 tells us that nothing can ever separate us from the Love of God. We are conquerors in life because of the love of God.

God is for you! God is on your side! We are not conquerors…we are more than conquerors. It is not our muscle and strength or our wisdom and passions that make us conquerors – it is God on our side. When we go through life in close fellowship with God then when hard things come up we lean on Him for guidance, direction and victory.

You see the world paints us a different picture. From the time that you where a small child you watched cartoons and saw super heroes. They always saved the day with their strength and power. So we become programmed in our heads to think that it is up to us to “save the day” and have victory over situations in our lives. We figure it out ourselves. But Gods way is completely different. He wants us to depend on Him. He wants to be the guiding force in your life.

√ So how are we conquerors?

Faith – “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.”

1 John 5:4

Faith believes in God as our Savior and Lord. Faith rests on the fact that God is in control and we are not. It trusts God in everything. We get faith from the Holy Spirit and through reading the Bible. We can ask God for more faith.

Faith in God is our victory over any situation. It does not take the situation away, but it gives us the victory in our hearts. You see, the battle is always one and lost in our heart.

Obey – “But God be thanked that through you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.” Romans 6:17

When you obey from the heart you put God in charge of your life. Obedience is giving someone else the authority they deserve. When you follow the teaching of the Bible and obey you allow God to be in charge of your life.

Conclusion: Play the song “Whom Shall I Fear” by Chris Tomlin – it will be provided for you and will be on the iPod in the sound booth and on CD (for 1st & 2nd grades in the copy room)
