Let Freedom Sing: How Music Inspired The Civil Rights Movement

Sunday, 7 February 2010 ABC2 Premiere

They raised their voices in song against inequality and racism. They gave the civil rights movement its anthems and its soul.

They were the singers and songwriters who fought for change and gave us songs like Blowin’ in the Wind, Oh Freedom, People Get

Ready, Respect and Fight the Power. Those songs and many others are at the core of this exclusive feature-length movie edition

of Let Freedom Sing: How Music Inspired the Civil Rights Movement.

There are dramatic first-person accounts by Mississippi Freedom Riders who sang to give themselves courage in the face of grave

danger. There are the songs from the 1963 March on Washington when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.

And there are award-winning artists and musicians whose songs inspired a generation to take up the struggle for civil rights and

human rights throughout America and the world.

Let Freedom Sing retells one of the greatest stories in American history. Billie Holiday’s song about lynching, Strange Fruit,

and the scalding bitterness of Big Bill Broonzy’s When Do I Get to Be Called a Man? take us back to the era of brutally enforced

segregation.

But the story sweeps us to the heart of the movement in the 1960s and explores its continuing impact on music, politics and

culture in the decades that followed. With never-before-seen historic footage and remarkable new interviews with Gladys Knight,

Ruby Dee, Chuck D., Andrew Young and Pete Seeger, among many others, Let Freedom Sing tells the story of the civil rights

movement as never before!

Cold Feet

Sunday, 7 February 2010

In episode 2 of the second series of this popular British comedy-drama, Jenny writes in her diary about her relationship with

Pete and her revelation – I think I don’t love you anymore. It looks like Jenny and Pete's marriage is on the rocks.

Jenny goes round to console Adam, who is devastated by Rachel’s confession that she’s had an abortion. But while Jenny is in the

toilet Pete rings Adam and persuades him to quiz Jenny about who she is really in love with - and to leave his mobile switched

on so that Pete can hear the whole conversation. Reluctantly Adam agrees. Much to Adam’s horror, Jenny reveals that it is him

she is in love with, and in a bid to silence Jenny he smashes his mouth momentarily against hers in a way that could be mistaken

for a passionate kiss.

When Pete reads Jenny’s diary and discovers that Adam kissed her, he pays a visit to Adam at work and punches him in the face.

He doesn’t know that Adam’s true motive was to protect Pete from the truth, and to save their friendship he confesses to Pete

that he is actually interested in his new flatmate ‘Rachel II’, not Jenny.

Adam breaks up with his current girlfriend, Amy, to clear the way for Rachel II. But when Adam and Rachel II go back to Adam’s

place after a drink they find Amy in Adam’s bed wearing only sexy lingerie – she can’t take no for an answer. Things go from bad

to worse when Adam’s ex-girlfriend, the original Rachel, drops in to admit her true feelings for Adam, and he answers the door

wearing only boxer shorts, with a naked Rachel II and a lingerie-clad Amy with him.

Meanwhile, David loves his new role as an out-of-work, attentive father and suggests to his wife Karen that, rather than finding

another job, they should sack the nanny and he should look after Josh from now on to cut back on expenses. But Karen has a plan

to force him to go back to work.

Durham County

Tuesday, 9 February 2010

They say there’s only six degrees of separation between you and the rest of the world. Sometimes it’s not even that many.

Sometimes the most brutal evil you can imagine is already part of your world.

Durham County is an emotionally powerful six-part series that centres on Detective Mike Sweeney (Hugh Dillon – Flashpoint) and

his family as they move from the city to a seemingly idyllic suburb in the hope of making a new start. But the appearance of a

local serial killer sees Mike assigned to the case and become increasingly suspicious that his new neighbour Ray Prager (Justin

Louis – Missing; Dawn Of The Dead) may be the killer.

Mike and Ray share a history stretching back as far as high school… a history that could have deadly consequences. This

award-winning Canadian drama also stars Australian actress Hélène Joy as Audrey Sweeney (Water Rats, Stingers).

In episode two, Police Detective Mike Sweeney is drawn into a web of his own deceptions as he confronts the murder of his lover,

Nathalie Lacroix. His daughter Sadie navigates the dangerous waters of teen sexuality. Ray Prager is thrown into chaos when his

wife leaves him.

An Ox's Tale: The John Entwistle Story

Wednesday, 10 February 2010

In 1964, The Who became one of the key figures of the British invasion, taking the American music scene by storm.

While Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend and Keith Moon took the spotlight with their on- stage antics, bass player John Entwistle,

dubbed the ‘the quiet one’, stood in the shadows poised to become the biggest bass in rock and roll.

With his arena-rock days behind him, ‘thunder fingers’ continued down his own path, finding great musical freedom with The John

Entwistle Band. However in 2002, after years of touring the solo project, he decided to bring back one of the greatest bands in

rock and roll history.

Tragically, plans for the North American Reunion Tour of The Who were cut short, when Entwistle was found dead in his Las Vegas

hotel room on the eve of the first show.

The film contains the last footage and interviews ever shot with Entwistle. It’s the one chance for fans to discover the real

life behind the man who far exceeded his greatest aspirations.

‘big beasts’ happy with just one cameraman between them.

Elsewhere, Margaret (Joanna Brookes) is recording the sound of a zebra’s breath, and Harry (Bruce MacKinnon) is teaching local

Breaking Bad: Cancer Man

Friday, 12 February 2010

Now that he’s told Skyler (Anna Gunn) his secret, and unaware that Hank’s (Dean Norris) search for his missing informant,

Krazy-8, is leading the DEA closer to exposing his drug dealing, Walt (Bryan Cranston) reveals the news about his cancer at a

family barbecue.

Although Skyler insists that they will get through it as a family, and Marie (Betsy Brandt) offers to set him up with an

oncology ‘dream team,’ Walt still refuses to borrow money from Hank to pay for the first appointment. So, after telling Skyler

that he will draw on his pension, he takes the cash from the money he and Jesse (Aaron Paul) ended up with following their

aborted drug deal.

Meanwhile, Jesse seeks refuge at his parents’ house, but it’s clear that he’s living in the shadow of his overachieving younger

brother, Jake. As Jesse does his best to obey his parents’ rules to keep from being thrown out, he’s surprised when Jake says

that he is actually the one that their mom and dad are always talking about.

After Jesse gets a call from his friends looking to buy more meth, Walt adamantly refuses to resume their partnership.

Meanwhile, Walt’s first visit to see Dr. Delcavoli makes it clear that he is facing a rocky road ahead.

Finally, after telling Skyler that he needs to give more thought to committing to an expensive series of cancer treatments, Walt

vents his rage over his circumstances on an arrogant young businessman’s expensive sports car.

9:30pm New Series

The Wire

The third season of television’s most uncompromising and realistic police drama, The Wire, debuts with an episode titled Time After Time.

The title refers to the cyclical process of initiating reform, change and then a return to the status quo.

Focusing on the workings of law enforcement amid the attrition of a city plagued by rampant crime, The Wire, captures the routine world of the criminal underground, offering a parallel bureaucracy that is in some ways more functional, if more brutal, than the system arrayed against it.

The Wire continues its detailed examination of a city's underground drug economy, focusing on the vagaries of crime and law enforcement in Baltimore, Maryland, while exploring the idea of reform and the role of the political leadership in addressing the city's problems.

The heat is on as the drug war is being lost.

Bodies are piling up, and a desperate Mayor wants the crime rates down before the election.

But the police department hasn't got any solutions. Wiretaps haven't worked. Neither have stakeouts or street busts. And no matter how hard the Baltimore police try, the drug dealers always seem to be one step ahead of the game.

It's time to change the rules.
