Association of Schools and Colleges.

The Community

Located 25 miles northeast of New York City and three miles from the Connecticut state line, Rye Country

Day draws its diverse student population from over 40 school districts in Westchester, Fairfield, and Putnam

Counties; New York City; and New Jersey. Our location provides us significant diversity: 29% of our overall

student body are students of color.

The School

Founded in 1869, the school now includes six buildings located on 26 acres. Rye Country Day's rigorous

academic program is supported by outstanding facilities, including seven science laboratories, 700 networked

computers, and significant library and online resources. Our strong commitment to the fine and performing

arts allows students access to superb studio and performance spaces, including a 515-seat theater and a 120seat performance/lecture hall. Because New York City is 40 minutes away, students are able to attend the

theater, concerts, and art exhibitions and take advantage of the resources of the greater metropolitan area.

Rye Country Day has a longstanding tradition of athletic excellence; over 75% of our students participate on

one or more interscholastic teams. The school's endowment funds exceed $53,400,000.

The Faculty

Of the diverse and talented 69-member Upper School faculty, over 86% hold advanced academic degrees and

a substantial number have served the School for many years. Many have experience teaching at the college

and university level. Recognizing that Rye Country Day's strength depends on its exceptional faculty, both the

school and the RCDS Parents Association offer significant grants to teachers to help further individual

professional development.

The Students

The Upper School consists of 401 students in grades 9-12, (the senior class has 100 students); 31% are

students of color; nearly 20% of Upper School students receive financial aid. In an area of fine public and

private schools, Rye Country Day students have chosen the school for its demanding academic program,

small and caring community, and outstanding classroom teaching. For 2017-2018 academic year, our

acceptance rate was 22%; our yield was 71%. Rye Country Day grants over $5,500,000 annually in financial

aid.

Academic Philosophy

Mission Statement

Rye Country Day School is a coeducational,

college preparatory school dedicated to

providing students from Pre-Kindergarten

through Grade 12 with an excellent

education using both traditional and

innovative approaches. In a nurturing and

supportive environment, we offer a

challenging program that stimulates

individuals to achieve their maximum

potential through academic, athletic,

creative and social endeavors. We are

actively committed to diversity. We expect

and promote moral responsibility and strive

to develop strength of character within a

respectful school community. Our goal is

to foster a lifelong passion for learning,

understanding and service in an everchanging world.

Rye Country Day is a demanding college preparatory school where academic rigor is a given. Faculty advisors

and students design an individualized academic program which typically exceeds well beyond graduation

requirements. For even moderate success, significant outside preparation is necessary both on a daily basis

and throughout the academic year.

We do not encourage students to compete against each other for grades or recognition. The school has

thoughtfully chosen not to have an honor roll, a dean's list, or academic societies. We do not

calculate a grade point average, nor do we rank our students.

The Curriculum

All entering ninth graders begin the English program with English 9; other departments admit students at

various levels. From these starting points, students progress individually, making choices which meet their

current interests and their future needs. (Students at Rye Country Day must meet specific academic

criteria to enroll in Advanced, Honors, or AP courses.) Students are encouraged to take risks and to

reinforce skills and understanding. They may accelerate beyond the boundaries of our own curriculum via

independent studies and through nearby college programs.

Disciplinary Reporting

When requested by colleges or schools, Rye Country Day will answer questions about suspension-level and

higher disciplinary actions taken by the school. (At RCDS, suspension always involves a follow-up period of

probation.) We also report to colleges and schools when a senior has dropped a year-long course or has been

removed from a major leadership role, such as peer mentoring, student government, or team captaincy after

they have made application to a school or college. When asked, we expect our students to answer honestly

any questions about suspension-level and higher offenses during their high school years.
