GATOR BOYS LOSE TOUGH OPENER - Greenbush-Middle …

GATORS SET TO DEFEND THEIR TITLE

The BGMR Boys Basketball Team is preparing to defend their Section 8A title as they opened up practice November 26th. Gone from last years team are; Jakob Heggedal, Dale Stauffenecker, and Nathan Thompson. Each was a key in the Gators unprecedented year and will be sorely missed. The Gators do however return 3 starters and one other who saw extensive playing time. Returning starters are all-conference players Jordan and Zac Creviston along with Tyler Aune.

Senior, Jordan Creviston will be looked at to pick up much of the leadership role. Jordan averaged 14.2 points per game last season and 4.3 rebounds. He is a talented offensive player and one of the players to watch in the area.

Junior, Zac Creviston led the Gators in scoring and rebounding last season (16.9 ppg and 7.2 rpg). Zac will also be a key to the Gators success and will need to take his game to the next level if the Gators hope to defend their title. He too is a gym rat and a player to watch in the area.

Senior, Tyler Aune had a nice summer and looks poised to have a breakout season. Aune has a lot of tools and will provide a tough match-up for most teams.

Junior, Allan Dostal will be counted on to provide some solid defensive play in the post. Dostal, who has a good shot, will also be looked at to provide some rugged play inside for the vertically challenged Gators.

Seniors Brandon Peterson and Carl Gaukerud are chomping at the bit to get some varsity time and will be relied on heavily should they rise to the challenge. Also returning from last seasons varsity team are juniors Jordan Holm and Nick Ellis and sophomore Adam Balstad. Each has strong areas and could see varsity action.

The Gator coaching staff anticipates some heavy competition for playing time at all levels. The basketball program had over 50 kids sign up in grades 7-12 and the coaches are looking forward to the intense practices that should come with that kind of turnout. All spots are open and those who work the hardest and show that they deserve to play will see the majority of the playing time.

Many of the sections throughout the state were realigned this past year and Section 8A has become a hotbed for basketball talent. Cass Lake (a team that took second in state last season) has moved into Section 8A and many have predicted them as the hands down favorite. The Gators subsection has become even more deep as perennial favorites Fertile and Grygla have now move from the east side to the west. With this realignment it looks like any one of 8 teams on the west side could make some noise come tournament time.

The Gators are looking forward to the challenge and it should make for another exciting year of high school boys basketball. The Gators will need any help they can get and would love to see the swamp packed on game nights. A great following on the road will also be appreciated as the Gators are playing their toughest schedule in years.

GATORS BOYS BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WITH WIN

The BGMR Boys Basketball won their season opening game for the first time in 5 years with a hard fought 74-62 victory. The Gators scored first and never looked back in route to the 12 point win.

Jordan Creviston, despite an upset stomach, scored 10. Allan Dostal had another solid game for the Gators scoring 9 and playing tough defense against the strong Storm post players. The story of the night however was the defense played by the Gators. The Gator defense led by senior guard Brandon Peterson, forced the Storm into several difficult shots and were usually limited to only 1 shot. This was the best defensive effort of the young season for the Gators.

BGMR will have its worked cut out for themselves when they face a talented Falcon team. The Falcons will be looking to avenge the two losses of last season. It should be a classic match-up with a lot of excitement growing around both teams. The Gator boys hope to see you at the contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 tomorrow night.

GATORS LOSE FIRST GAME OF TOURNAMENT

The BGMR Gators Boy’s Basketball Team suffered their first loss of the season falling 65-60 to Pequot Lakes. The Gators, who were playing their first game in two weeks, came out on fire however a composed Pequot Lakes team withered the storm to keep the game close and won the game with a 9-0 run at the mid point of the second half. The Gators put up a true fight after a sloppy two minutes in which the Patriots made their run. BGMR cut the lead to two at one point but the Patriots always found an answer nailing the free throws down the stretch to win the game. The Patriots changing zone defenses also created a problem for the Gators and will be something the Gators will be working on over the next couple of weeks.

Scoring leaders for the Gators were Zac Creviston who had 23, Jordan Creviston who added 13 and Allan Dostal who threw in 10.

Despite suffering their first setback of the season the night before BGMR bounced back with a dominating 85-61 victory over Long Praire/Grey Eagle. The Gators again had an outstanding team effort. Scoring wise the Gators were lead by Zac Creviston and Tyler Aune who each had 21. It was especially gratifying for Aune who had a tough first night of the tournament. Jordan Creviston chipped in 21 to be the only other double digit scorer. 6 other Gators however found their way into the scoring column.

With the win the Gators took third place in the Little Falls Holiday Tournament and pushed their record to 5-1.

The Gator boys hope to see you there.

PONIES TAME GATORS

In an intense 6 star conference game the Warren-Alvarado-Ponies Boys Basketball Team downed the BGMR Gators 86-76. BGMR started the game off strong but ran into early foul trouble and did not have an answer for the balanced scoring of the Ponies. The Gators had fallen down by 13 in the first half but managed to cut the Pony lead to 5 by halftime. BGMR scored the first two baskets of the second half and trailed by only 1 when the Ponies Casey Larson and Evan Mattson took over the game. Each hit big time shots throughout the second half and the Gator defense did not rise to the challenge. Mattson and Larson finished with 23 apiece. The Ponies also had Ryan Oas with 16 and Kipp Loeslie with 14.

Offensively the Gators were led by Jordan Creviston who poured in 23. Zac Creviston chipped in 22 and Tyler Aune was the only other Gator in double figures with 11.

The Gators man to man defense however stifled the Wildcats and the Gators managed a 23-18 halftime lead. BGMR used an 18-3 run early in the second half to blow open a fairly tight game and the Wildcats were unable to recover with the deliberate offense.

Both teams opened it up a little in the second half and exchanged the lead several times before the Gators went on the big run.

Neither team would have had problems with a shot clock in the first half as the shots were going up fast and furious. The Gators however raced to a 47-41 halftime lead.

BGMR cranked up the defense and held the high scoring Ponies to 25 second half points. Offensively Tyler Aune led the Gators scoring 26 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Senior Brandon Peterson orchestrated the Gator offense like BGMR band directors Deland Elseth and Lisa Erickson directing their concerts. Memories for fans, players and coaches that are priceless.

The Gator Basketball Program would like to thank all the parents and fans for their support this season. A lot goes into making a successful program and many people (too many to list) took part in this years success. The Gators are losing some outstanding seniors in Peterson, Creviston, Gaukerud, and Aune. However they are returning a good core group of players. Off-season workouts will be a key for many of the up and coming Gators. The ball is now in their court and what they do with it is up to them. Opening practice is only 8 months away and as most of us know, time flies!
