FROM THE PRESIDENT

To the club,

I would like to thank the club for providing Sarah enough names so we can have a mixer with business people.  It should be a winner no matter how it goes.  People will find out what Rotary is, and what the Bellevue Rotary Club does.  And if we are lucky we may have a few new Rotarians in our club.

I look forward to see how the Bellevue Food Pantry Project turns out.  Due to our efforts the electrical wiring and fixtures have been upgraded.  The Pantry is in the process of replacing its flooring and its shelves.  We are exploring the possibility of the club helping the Food Pantry in removing the food on a temporary basis so that the flooring can be replaced without having to move the food around.

In the last couple of weeks I had a chat with the Rotary Foundation chair and he said we continue to be one of the biggest contributors to the Rotary International Foundation.  For me the Foundation is an easy sell.  Virtually all the money donated goes to the works and the District gets to decide on what ½ of all money donated gets to be spent on.  There are few foundations that remain so close to its donors.

On January 16, 2014 the Bellevue Rotary Club celebrated its 39th year.  The Omaha West Rotary shepherded our club in existence. Our club has had three District Governors in its ranks.  Earl Sonnemaker, Jim Blue, and Cheryl Blue.

Let us all wish Jerry Monson the best during his recovery from surgery.  During his absence I will be doing the interim treasurer duties.  Assisting me will be Fred and Herb to keep me on track.  I look forward in handing the duties back to Jerry upon his return!

Remember to have fun!

FROM ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

Couple’s $1.1 million dollar gift

Rotary member Terry Caster and his wife, Barbara, announced a $1.1 million gift to Rotary to help eradicate polio. What’s more, their gift will be matched two-for-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, resulting in $3.3 million in new funding for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The Casters' gift is one of the largest-ever individual contributions to Rotary for polio eradication. In addition to supporting our No. 1 goal of a polio-free world, the couple gave $750,000 to the Rotary Peace Centers to fund a peace fellow’s studies every other year. Both gifts were made to The Rotary Foundation in December.

"Barbara and I are blessed to be fruitful in our family business, A-1 Self Storage," said Terry, the company's founder and a member of the Rotary Club of La Mesa in California. "We've always felt it is important to give back and help others, so we are involved in numerous charities.

"But as a Rotarian, I can think of no cause more worthy than Rotary's work to end polio and promote peace," said Terry, who received Rotary's Service Above Self Award in 1993 for his humanitarian work.

What Makes Us As Rotarians Different?

Our distinct point of view and approach gives us unique advantages:

• We see differently: Our multidisciplinary perspective helps us see challenges in unique ways.

• We think differently: We apply leadership and expertise to social issues—and find unique solutions.

• We act responsibly: Our passion and perseverance create lasting change.

• We make a difference at home and around the world: Our members can be found in your community and across the globe.

How Do We work?

Our impact starts with our members—people who work tirelessly with their clubs to solve some of our communities' toughest challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, our member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world. Rotary is led by our members—responsible leaders who help to carry forward our organization's mission and values in their elected roles.

How Did We Get Here?

We've been making history and bringing our world closer together for over 100 years. Since forming in 1905, we've taken on some of the world's toughest challenges and helped a wide range of international and service organizations—from the UN to Easter Seals—get started.

How Do We Use Our Funds?

Responsible leadership means more than just doing good work—it means making the most out of every donation we receive.

UPCOMING EVENTS

February 8th, Dinner at 5pm followed by “Ten Little Indians” at the Bellevue Little Theater. Play starts at 7:30. Join us for one or both! Please RSVP to Rich James at rjames@

A special thank you for those who sent Sarah Conaway your prospective member lists. She is working on finalizing plans for the prospective member events and the board is voting in February on speaker gifts.

THE FOUR WAY TEST—of the things we think, say, or do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”

-Albert Schweitzer
