1. BACKGROUND. Lakewood High School NJROTC unit will host an Area 11 “Brain Brawl” on Saturday, February 22, 2020, (02/22/2020 more 2s than any other day until the year 2022).

Details include:

• Team size: 4 cadets, with an optional 5th cadet as an alternate.

• Date/time of competition: Saturday, February 22, from 0900 until completion (~1400, 2 O’clock).

• Entry fee: $120/team, which includes light morning refreshments and lunch for up to 6 people per team.

• Awards:

1. Trophies to the top 4 teams

2. Medals for the team members of the top 4 teams.

3. Medals to the top cadet for each team; they will compete in the all-star round immediately following lunch.

• Team make-up restrictions apply per paragraph 4 below.

• We recommend parking in the NE parking lot off of Centralia. Currently Lakewood NJROTC is located in the “old” building from prior to 2016.

2. BRAIN BRAWL BASIC FORMAT. A Brain Brawl is a purely academic competition among cadets given in a game format similar to the TV game shows such as Jeopardy and College Bowl.

• Each team competes in at least two preliminary rounds. Each round consists of 15 toss-up questions & bonus questions followed immediately by a 15 question lightning round of toss-up questions only (see paragraph 6).

o Toss-up questions are from the Cadet Field Manual, Cadet Reference Manual, Introduction to the Navy(NS1), NS2, NS3 and Cultural Awareness textbooks.

o Bonus questions are earned by successfully answering a toss-up question and are trivia questions on a wide range of topics.

o Questions are NOT multiple choice but instead require a verbal response from contestants.

o Every 5th question will be a NS1 ONLY question except in the All Star match

• Each contestant has a buzzer. Questions are read aloud with contestants offered the opportunity to “buzz-in” in accordance with paragraph 6 restrictions. Responses are taken in the precedence of those that “buzzed-in” until a correct response is obtained or time expires.

• The 6 teams with the highest total score in two preliminary rounds meet after lunch to determine their final ranking for trophies and medals. The best 2 teams from the morning will automatically advance to the finals round. The other 4 teams will meet in a semi-final round, with the top 2 from here going to the finals.

• The scores of the top teams will be reset to 0 at the beginning of the finals round.

• All cadet finalists will receive a uniform medal and each of the 4 finalist teams will receive a trophy. All teams participating are invited to stay and watch the finals.

3. SCHEDULE: An in-brief will be conducted for all contestants at 0900. All SNSI’s/NSI’s/cadets must attend the in-Brief unless travel time impacts a reasonable departure time for that school. Round 1 will start not later than 0930. The Brain Brawl of 16 teams will be complete at approximately 1400. 16 teams are the maximum number of teams that will be supported at this brawl.

4. TEAM COMPOSITION. Each school’s team will consist of a maximum of five cadets, with four cadets being primary, and one cadet designated an alternate. The alternate cadet will be allowed, but not required, to substitute at the complete of the first 15 questions before the lightning round. However, once a cadet has participated on one team, they cannot participate on another of the school’s teams in the same Brain Brawl. Only cadets from your school can participate on your teams.

Of the four primary cadets, the final composition of your team is based on a rule of 10. The sum of the NS levels of your cadets must be equal to or less than 10. From that starting combination, you may replace any cadet with a cadet of lesser experience to build your team. Tiebreakers will go to the team with the least experience first as stated in Paragraph 5 section F: Tiebreakers. Instructors should carefully consider their team’s combination of experience before selecting their team.

Here is a special rule that you may want to consider when selecting the Naval Science levels of your team composition. Only NS-1 cadets will be permitted to buzz-in on a NS-1 ONLY toss-up question. The intent of this rule is to promote the play of our most junior cadets and to eliminate or at least dilute domination of the game by a single player on a team.

5. ROUND PLAY FORMAT.

A. Preliminary Rounds. A “round” consist of a toss-up phase, individual question phase and a lightning phase. The toss-up phase is 15 questions comprised of toss-up and bonus questions. The individual question phase will have each cadet asked a question that only they can answer, and the lightning phase will be 15 toss-up questions only. Each school’s four-cadet team will compete against other four-cadet teams. The first half of the meet will consist of four rounds, with each round consisting of four teams. Each team will participate minimally in two full rounds plus All Star.

B. Breaks. Every attempt will be made to offer each team a 30-minute break between halves to strategize and refresh. They will then face additional teams during the second half. Second half match-ups will generally pit the strongest teams against each other and weakest teams against one another to the most extent possible. If a school enters two teams, they may end up facing each other at some point in the competition, but will not face each other in both rounds.

C. Semi-Final Round. After the first 2 rounds are completed, the scores will be tallied and the top 6 teams will advance to the afternoon rounds. The 1st and 2nd high scoring teams will get a bye to the final round. The next 4 teams will compete after lunch in a playoff round. The format of the playoff round will be identical to the preliminary rounds.

D. All-Star Round. The top cadets from each team will meet in a chance to see who has the biggest brain. It will be consist of a 15 question lightning round. Cadets will compete individually representing their team/school. The all-star round will start immediately after Lunch. Each of the 16 all-stars will be awarded a medal.

E. Final Round. The final championship round will follow a 5-minute break after the all-star round. The four teams with the highest combined scores totaled from preliminary rounds will compete in the final championship round. No scores will carry over to the final round; all four teams will start at zero in the championship round. Substitutions may again be made prior to the start of the final round. The final round will be fifteen toss-up questions and bonus questions followed by a fifteen question lightning round of toss-up questions only. The highest scores in points will determine the place of finish and trophies awarded.

F. Tiebreaker. Section 7.

6. QUESTIONS.

A. Toss-up questions. All toss-up questions will be Naval Science questions from the NS textbooks and materials to include current events. Each toss-up question will be read aloud to all four teams until an individual cadet buzzes in. Once a cadet buzzes in, the emcee will stop reading the question and give five seconds for the individual to answer. CADETS MUST NOT ANSWER UNTIL CALLED ON BY THE EMCEE. Cadets who do so will be deducted 5 points and the opportunity to answer given to the next cadet in line.

B. Correct and incorrect answers. A correct answer to a toss-up question earns ten points for that team and a bonus question will then be read for the team that answered the toss-up question correctly. An incorrect toss-up answer will deduct five points from that individual’s team score and preclude that cadet from answering that question again. Negatives scores will occur. If the first answer for the toss-up is incorrect, any other cadets who have buzzed in will be given the opportunity to answer the question in the order that they buzzed in. Should none of those cadets get the question right, the emcee will continue to read the toss-up question in its entirety. As the emcee continues to finish the question, remaining cadets may attempt to answer. If no correct answer is given by any team five seconds after the emcee has finished the question, the emcee will verbally state the correct answer and proceed to the next toss-up question.

D. Bonus questions will be awarded to the team that correctly answers a toss-up question. Bonus questions may be on a variety of subjects including such topics as geography, entertainment, sports, history, current events, and most general trivia. Each team will have 15 seconds to verbally confer with one another after the question has been read. Each team must designate a team captain who must give their entire answer at the end of the time limit unless the questions are assigned to cadets such as spelling. Each bonus question will be a four-part answer worth a total of 20 points with each answer being worth five points. For example, if three correct answers were given out of a possible four, the team would be awarded 15 points for three out of four correct answers.

7. PLACEMENT AND TIES. Placement in the tournament will be based on the team score totals. Ties prior to the semifinals will be determined by the team with the lowest NS total. If this is a tie, the team with the youngest cadet will win the tie. In the event of any tie in the semi finals/finals, a sudden death tie-breaker will ensue.  Both teams will be asked a single toss-up question; all cadets will write the answer on a slip of paper.  The senior most cadet on each team will reveal their answer.  If only one cadet has the correct answer, that cadet’s team shall be declared the winner. If both or neither answer correctly, the next senior cadet on each team will reveal their answer.  This process shall continue until a winner can be determined.  If necessary, additional toss-up questions will be asked.

8. UNIFORMS. Uniform for the brawl will be “peel-off/stick-on” nametags (provided by LHS) on school colors. NJROTC polo/athletic drill meet attire is recommended (cold weather warm-ups or sweats if you have them). All cadets from each school should be dressed the same and every cadet must have their name and NS level clearly visible on their left or right breast pocket. Peel-off labels and Sharpies will be provided at the in-brief. School/NJROTC ball caps are OK, but no do-rags or berets. NJROTC Uniforms are also authorized. No formal inspection will take place, but cadets that do not meet NJROTC grooming standards will not be permitted to participate.

9. FEES. Cost will be $120 per team. This will cover entry fees to include trophies (1st-4th place), gold/silver/bronze/bronze medals (cadets on top four teams), and gold medals for the all-star cadets, plus lunch/snacks/drinks for up to six people from each school. All food and drinks are included in the cost of the meet. If you bring spectators or parents who will eat lunch, their lunch will be $7/person (one adult is included in the entry fee for each team).

10. RSVP. RSVPs will be guaranteed only by mailing entry fees to Lakewood NJROTC. Schools may initially enter one team, but may pay for an additional team as well. Additional teams will only be granted spots on February 7th if the original 16 spots are not spoken for.

11. PAYMENTS, POC. Send check for $120 per team payable to LAKEWOOD NJROTC BOOSTER CLUB. Please add $7.00 per guest to your check for anyone attending that will eat lunch or snack beyond your initial limit of six people.
