TROPICAL DEPRESSION IDA Status at 1000 AM CDT (1500 UTC) 31 August 2021

Hurricane Ida made landfall in southeastern Louisiana as an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane the afternoon of 29 August

A major disaster declaration is in effect throughout Louisiana

Ida is now a Tropical Depression with maximum sustained winds of 30mph (45km/h) with higher gusts

Ida is moving northeast (50?) across the Tennessee Valley at 15mph (24km/h); this motion is expected to gradually accelerate over the next couple of days

The center of Ida was located at 35.0N 87.8W about 60 miles (95km) WNW of Huntsville, Alabama and about 100 miles (160km) SW of Nashville, Tennessee

Flood and Flash Flood Watches extend form the Gulf Coast region across the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, central and southern Appalachians, into the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward to 150miles (240km), mainly southeast of the center over water

Authorities have reported at least two deaths due to the storm in Louisiana

As of early today all areas of New Orleans are without power

Power outages are affecting at least 1 million customers in Louisiana and at least 50,000 people in Mississippi

Approximately 18 water systems are not functioning affecting over 300,000 customers. Boil wate advisories are in effect.

Summary

At 1000 AM CDT (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Depression Ida was located near 35N 87.8W about about 60 miles (95km) WNW of Huntsville, Alabama and about 100 miles (160km) SW of Nashville, Tennessee. Ida is moving northeast (50?) across the Tennessee Valley at 15mph (24km/h); this motion is expected to gradually accelerate over the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 30 mph (45 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 996 mb (29.42 inches).

Considerable heavy rain and flood threat will continue to spread from the Tennesee and Ohio Valleys into the central and southern Appalachians and mid-Atlantic through Wednesday.

Key Messages

1. Considerable flash flooding is possible from the Middle Tennessee Valley, Ohio Valley, Central and Southern Appalachians, into the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England, with additional widespread moderate and isolated major river flooding impacts forecast from northern West Virginia and western Maryland into southern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

2. Widespread minor to isolated major river flooding is occurring or forecast from the Lower Mississippi Valley into far western Alabama. Rivers will remain elevated into next week.

3. The threat for a couple of tornadoes will be centered this evening across eastern Alabama, western Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. On Wednesday, the threat of a few tornadoes will shift into portions of the Mid Atlantic.
