This means that a student will be earning both high school credits and college hours at the same time. Dual Credit typically lowers the total cost of post-secondary education and shortens the time required for a student to complete a post-secondary degree.“How is a Dual Credit course different from a regular high school course?”All Riesel High School Dual Credit courses are taught by MCC professors, some are taught in a classroom on the high school campus, some are taken on-line and some are a mixture of both (meaning that a student may see a professor every once in a while, but do at least part of their work and discussion on-line). A dual Credit student must be self-aware and self-motivated, as college professors will treat them much the same as they would a regular college student and college-level work will be expected of them. Parents can monitor their student’s progress by simply asking their student to login and show them their MCC Blackbaord/WebAdvisor account. This can be done at any point in the semester. Dual Credit students are ultimately responsible for the grades that they earn in their classes and are expected to maintain communication with their professors should they have any personal issues arise that may affect their performance. Dual Credit students are to adhere to the schedule and syllabi given to them by their professors, Riesel ISD does not have the ability to alter any due dates, nor to request any extensions on behalf of our students. If there is a scheduling or personal conflict of any kind, the student bears the responsibility of contacting their professors to make other arrangements or discussing options. “Are you sure that the credits earned through dual credit will transfer to the college or university that I want to attend?”Most of the credits in MCC’s Level 1 High School Pathways curriculum will transfer to state funded colleges and universities. It is recommended, however, that a student speak with an MCC advisor if they are planning to attend a private University or talk to an advisor from the school they are planning to attend to ensure for themselves that the credit will definitely transfer. “What dual credit courses are offered at Riesel High School?”EDUC 1300 (College readiness course)DRAM 1310 (Theater, fulfills basic Fine Arts requirement)SOCI 1301 (Sociology)SPCH 1315 (Speech)ENGL 1301 & 1302 (English, writing composition)HIST 1301 & 1302 (United States History)ENGL 2322 &2323 (British Literature)GOVT 2305 & 2306 (American Government and Texas Government, respectively)Frequently Asked Questions continued…ECO 2301 (Macroeconomics) All elective courses for seniors, including advanced Math and Science courses, must be approved by Riesel ISD Administration.“What is a passing grade in dual credit?”Credit will be awarded to a Riesel High School student who earns a “C” or better as their semester average. If a student is to be reimbursed for payment on the course, he/she must earn a “B” or better (students on tuition waivers do not qualify for reimbursement). “What happens if I earn lower than a “C” in a dual credit course? The failing grade will be recorded on your transcript and it will affect both high school and college GPAs, which might affect a student’s high school ranking and his/her ability to receive financial aid in a post-secondary setting in the future. Also, a student must maintain a college GPA of 2.0 in order to continue dual credit participation. The student is responsible for regaining any high school required course credit that they lose due to a failing Dual Credit grade. “Who can take dual credit courses?”Riesel High School students may begin Dual Credit courses in the Fall of their sophomore year. Each student must turn in all required forms and testing prior to the deadline outlined in this handbook.“How much does Dual Credit cost?”If your student does not qualify for a tuition waiver, each course costs approximately $215 each after taxes, but Riesel ISD has made a commitment to encouraging academic excellence and will reimburse your family for the cost each individual course, if your student earns a “B” or better in it. Riesel ISD has also taken on the responsibility of supplying books to our dual credit students, but the student is responsible for not returning any textbooks and the price of the book should they lose or destroy it.“What happens if I am placed in DAEP or an alternative education program?”If a student is removed due to discipline referral to an alternate education placement (DAEP), he/she will automatically be withdrawn from all dual credit classes and lose the opportunity for reimbursement for those dual credit courses. The student will bear the responsibility for making up the coursework if it was a required high school core course and any affect that this may have on his/her high school and college GPAs. ‘How will my college class affect my high school schedule and GPA?”Dual Credit courses receive a weight of 1.08 on the final semester average and are figured in through GPA calculation in accordance with Riesel ISD policy. Dropping a course with a “W” means that the grade will not be included on the student’s transcripts, but an accumulation of three “W”s and the student will no longer be allowed to enroll in Dual Credit courses through McLennan Community College.
