This section should take the form of an abstract of the general subject or study area and identify the discipline(s) within which it falls. This template is designed to assist you in writing a research thesis in the correct structure and format as required by the College of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS). This template should serve as a starting point for any student writing a research thesis. The headings and styles give an indication of the sections required in the research thesis. A research thesis is an outline of your project that is designed to:Define a clear question and approach to answering it Highlight its originality and/or significance Explain how it adds to, develops (or challenges) existing literature in the field Persuade readers of the importance of the work. The introduction of the research thesis should aim to catch the reader’s interest and should be written in a style that can be understood easily by any reader with a general computing science background. It gives an overview of the research project you propose and explains the background of the project, focusing briefly on the major issues of its knowledge domain. It then proceeds with the presentation of the research focus, which can take the form of a hypothesis, a research question, a project statement, or a goal statement. MotivationIn this section you should write about the major motivations of your research.Problem StatementIn this section you should provide a research statement that captures both the essence of the project and its delimiting boundaries (scope). Hence it should be followed by a clarification of the extent to which you expect its outcomes to represent an advance in the knowledge domain you have described. This section states the problem that you are exploring. The research statement is specific, concise, and clear. Answer the question: “What is the gap that needs to be filled?” and/or “What is the problem that needs to be solved?” State the problem clearly early in a paragraph. Limit the variables you address in stating your problem. Consider framing the problem as a question. You will probably need to address questions such as;What is the specified aspect in the defined area (you provided the area in the research problem section) in which you will be working? What is the shortcoming in the defined area or gap in this defined area that you would like to addressResearch Objectives Next, you have to describe the research goal(s) as it relates to solving the uncertainty or question you are interested in. It should explicitly hint towards the contribution you want to make with the intended study. You will elaborate on the scientific contribution made in a later section. Goal describes what you want to achieve. Objectives describe how you are going to achieve the goal(s).Objectives should be S.M.A.R.T.:Specific – be precise about what you are going to doMeasureable – specify an indicator for success, so that you will know when you have reached your goalAchievable –a less ambitious but completed objective is better than an over-ambitious one that you cannot possible achieve.Realistic – do you have the necessary resources to achieve the objective? Time constrained – determine when each stage needs to be completed. The clarification of the research objectives should relate your research to the work carried out by others. It should explain the measure to which your work develops from their work and the extent to which it diverges from theirs to open up new and yet unexplored avenues. It explains what you plan to do to tackle your research problem, why you plan to do it that way, and how you are going to do it.Thesis Contribution to the Field/ Significance and /or Impact of the ResearchYou will need to explain the research significance, and locate it within the relevant literature. A convincing statement is required as to why your topic is worth scientific research, i.e. how it will contribute to and enrich the academic knowledge. This contribution results from your research activities, which are conducted to discover new information, as well as to expand and verify existing knowledge. You need to provide indication of how you feel your research can make an original contribution, how it may fill gaps in existing work and how it may extend understanding of particular topics in your particular subject area. The working paper by Dr. John Morrison ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"abstract":"It is an undisputed fact that the great business schools of the world are those institutions that not only transmit knowledge, but also create knowledge through academic research and disseminate the newly acquired knowledge to their stakeholders. A working paper series is one way of disseminating knowledge at an early stage of inception and of providing a test-bed for new ideas, work in progress or simply academic debate which has not yet reached full maturity. It is a means of allowing stakeholders to keep their 'fingers on the pulse' of current academic activity in an academic institution. I trust that this new initiative of Professor Hein Oosthuizen, head of the Doctoral Programme at the USB, will receive the support that it deserves as a showcase of the intellectual debate in the School and that stakeholders will not only benefit from the debate, but will become active participants in progressive business thinking. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The culmination of research into an acceptable PhD dissertation is the all-encompassing consideration for the student. However, this outcome can only be reached after a long and often thankless research journey. This journey in itself is very lonely and the researcher continuously struggles by him-or herself to ensure that the research process will eventually make a contribution to the particular scientific field being explored. With this uncertainty in mind, together with the non-specific nature of the term 'contribution', one of the USB's PhD registrants, John Morrison, set himself the task to seek some clarity on the issue. His endeavour resulted in this working paper. We thank John for his effort and trust that this paper will act as a guide for others seeking the satisfaction of 'making a contribution'.","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Morrison","given":"JM","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"Working paper","id":"ITEM-1","issue":"1","issued":{"date-parts":[["2003"]]},"title":"A contribution to scientific knowledge","type":"article-journal"},"uris":[""]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"[1]","plainTextFormattedCitation":"[1]","previouslyFormattedCitation":"[1]"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":""}[1] is a good resource for helping you understand what constitutes a contribution. First of all, it demonstrates that you have built a solid knowledge of the field where the research is taking place, that you are familiar with the main issues at stake, and that you have critically identified and evaluated the key literature ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"DOI":"10.3390/app9214656","ISSN":"2076-3417","abstract":"<p>This work presents a deep learning method for scene description. (1) Background: This method is part of a larger system, called BlindSys, that assists the visually impaired in an indoor environment. The method detects the presence of certain objects, regardless of their position in the scene. This problem is also known as image multi-labeling. (2) Methods: Our proposed deep learning solution is based on a light-weight pre-trained CNN called SqueezeNet. We improved the SqueezeNet architecture by resetting the last convolutional layer to free weights, replacing its activation function from a rectified linear unit (ReLU) to a LeakyReLU, and adding a BatchNormalization layer thereafter. We also replaced the activation functions at the output layer from softmax to linear functions. These adjustments make up the main contributions in this work. (3) Results: The proposed solution is tested on four image multi-labeling datasets representing different indoor environments. It has achieved results better than state-of-the-art solutions both in terms of accuracy and processing time. Typical pixel-based classification methods are unfeasible for large-scale VHR images. Thus, as a practical and efficient solution, we propose to subdivide the large image into a grid of tiles and then classify the tiles instead of classifying pixels. Our proposed method uses the power of a pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) to first extract descriptive features from each tile. Next, a neural network classifier (composed of 2 fully connected layers) is trained in a semisupervised fashion and used to classify all remaining tiles in the image. This basically presents a coarse classification of the image, which is sufficient for many RS application. The second contribution deals with the employment of the semisupervised learning to improve the classification accuracy. We present a novel semisupervised approach which exploits both the spectral and spatial relationships embedded in the remaining unlabelled tiles. In particular, we embed a spectral graph Laplacian in the hidden layer of the neural network. In addition, we apply regularization of the output labels using a spatial graph Laplacian and the random Walker algorithm. Experimental results obtained by testing the method on two large-scale images acquired by the IKONOS2 sensor reveal promising capabilities of this method in terms of classification accuracy even with less than ten training samples per class.","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Alhichri","given":"Haikel","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""},{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Othman","given":"Essam","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""},{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Zuair","given":"Mansour","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""},{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Ammour","given":"Nassim","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""},{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Bazi","given":"Yakoub","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"Journal of Sensors","id":"ITEM-2","issue":"Systems and Sensors in Geoscience Applications","issued":{"date-parts":[["2018"]]},"page":"1687-725X","title":"Tile-Based Semisupervised Classification of Large-Scale VHR Remote Sensing Images","type":"article-journal","volume":"2018"},"uris":[""]},{"id":"ITEM-3","itemData":{"DOI":"DOI 10.1007/s13369-014-1037-3","ISBN":"1319-8025","ISSN":"1319-8025","abstract":"During the past few years, cluster ensemble methods have been introduced in the area of pattern recognition as a more accurate alternative to individual clustering algorithms as they can provide novel, robust, and stable solutions. The development of these methods is mainly motivated by the success of the combination of supervised classifiers also known as classifier ensemble. In this paper, we propose a novel ensemble method for the classification of hyperspectral images based on Fuzzy c-means (FCM) and Markov random field (MRF) theory. Firstly, in order to construct the ensemble of clustering maps, which call here \"partitions\", we run the FCM algorithm several times with different initializations and different subsets of features (spectral bands) selected randomly from the high-dimensional input feature vector characterizing the hyperspectral image. Secondly, since there is no-ground truth information, the class labels contained in each generated partition are symbolic, meaning that the same class of pixels can be labeled with different labels in different partitions of the ensemble. Therefore, an optimal relabeling of the ensemble with respect to a representative partition determined on the basis of the maximum entropy principle is made via a pairwise relabeling procedure. Finally, in the last step, the relabeled partitions are fused by means of an MRF method. The latter exploits two kinds of sources of contextual information: spatial and inter-partition contextual information. During the optimization process, the contributions of the different partitions are controlled through mutual information weights.","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Alhichri","given":"H","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""},{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Ammour","given":"N","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""},{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Alajlan","given":"N","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""},{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Bazi","given":"Y","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering","id":"ITEM-3","issue":"5","issued":{"date-parts":[["2014"]]},"page":"3747-3757","title":"Clustering of Hyperspectral Images with an Ensemble Method Based on Fuzzy C-Means and Markov Random Fields","type":"article-journal","volume":"39"},"uris":[""]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"[2]–[4]","plainTextFormattedCitation":"[2]–[4]"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":""}[2]–[4].
