To change from a percent into a decimal

or
2. Divide the percent by 100.
Example: Change 30% into a decimal.
30/100 = 0.30 = 0.3
To change from a decimal to a percent
1. Move the decimal two places to the right
or
2. Multiply by 100

[pic]
To change a fraction to a percent
Turn the fraction into a decimal. And then multiply by 100.
Example: Change [pic] into a percent.
[pic] = 0.125 and 0.125(100) = 12.5%
To find the percent change
Divide the now by the previous and subtract 1 (which is 100%)
Example: Find the percent increase or decrease from 75 to 45.
[pic] 0.6 – 1 = -0.4
There was a 40% decrease.
A Markup increases the price of an item. This occurs after the store buys an item from somewhere and then increases the price when they sell it to make a profit.
A discount will decrease the price of an item through a sale of some sort.
A tax will increase the price of an item after it has been marked up or discounted.
To find the final cost
Apply each markup, discount, and/or tax 1 at a time by either adding or subtracting the percentage from 100% and then multiplying it by the price.
Example: Find the final cost if original price of a lizard: $39.99; Discount: 40%; Tax: 6%
$39.99(0.6)=$23.99(1.06)= $25.43 or $39.99(0.6)(1.06) = $25.43
Is-Of Problems
1. Think of percents as meaning part out of a whole
% (as a decimal)[pic]
2. Decide if the answer is larger or smaller than the numbers given. Then multiply or divide the number accordingly. Multiplying by something less than a whole will make the answer smaller. Dividing by something less than a whole will make the answer larger.
Example
a. What percent of 29 is 3?
(3 is the part, 29 is the whole; the answer should be a percent less than 100)
% [pic] = 0.103448 [pic]
b. 41% of 78 is what?
(41 is the percent, 78 is the whole; the answer is smaller, so we multiply)
.41 = [pic] => x = .41(78) => x = 31.98
c. 58% of what is 63.4?
(58 is the percent, 63.4 is the part; the answer is the whole which is larger, so we divide)
[pic] => [pic] => [pic]
