Calculator Directions for Linear Regression on TI-84 CE

Before you begin, clear out any equations in the function editor.

STEP 1: Enter the data into two lists L1 and L2.

Press

Choose 1:Edit

Clear Lists if there is data. Use

to move curser to cover L1 at the top of the list.

Press

Repeat the process for L2.

Type the data values for the independent (x) variable in column L1. Press enter after each entry.

When you finish entering the data in L1, press

and then enter the data values for the

dependent (y)

STEP 2: Making the scatterplot

Press

Choose 1:Plot 1

Turn On the plot by pressing

Next to Type: you should have selected

(scatterplot)

For Xlist: you should have L1

For Ylist: you should have L2

For Mark: you may choose any of the options to represent the points on your scatterplot. You can also change the color of your data points.

Press

and choose 9:ZoomStat

STEP 3: Getting the regression equation and storing it into the equation editor.

Press

then

to CALC

Choose 4:LinReg(ax+b)

Xlist: L1 and Ylist: L2

Press

to Store RegEQ:

and Select 1: Y1

Press

to Calculate and then Press

The coefficients of your linear regression equation (a and b) will be displayed on your home screen. The linear regression equation will be stored in the function editor in Y1.

Creating a list of regression values from L1 and L2 after you have the regression equation. Populate L3 with regression values:

Highlight the label

Press

Populate L4 with the square of the regression values: Highlight the label

Press

Use the calculator to find the sum of the squares of the residuals.

Change the list to L4

Highlight the entry you need to change
