UK Officer to Head Continuing Education Association

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 27, 2005) – Philip A. Greasley, University of Kentucky associate vice president of University Initiatives, has been elected president of the Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE). His one-year term begins Nov. 1.

ACHE, headquartered in Charleston, S.C., has more than 1,700 members at 325 affiliated colleges and universities, and 20 adjunct organizations in 48 states, the District of Columbia and 10 foreign countries.

The organization is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning and excellence in continuing higher education. It encourages professional development, research, and exchange of information for its members and continuing higher education as a means of enhancing and improving society.

Greasley is a past chair of the UK Continuing Education Council, past president of the Kentucky Postsecondary Continuing Education Council, and a past chair of the Association for Continuing Higher Education’s Region VII (southeast U.S.). He is also the president-elect of the national Coalition of Lifelong Learning Organizations and frequently serves on Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation review teams.

As associate vice president of University Initiatives, Greasley reports to Vice President William H. Turner and works with the Commonwealth Collaboratives and UK engagement activities.

He served as dean of UK’s University Extension from 1989 to 2005 and as director of the UK Fort Knox Center from 1978 to 1988. He is a tenured UK associate professor of English and has a doctorate in English from Michigan State University, with continuing research interests in American and Midwestern Literature.

Greasley is the general editor of “The Dictionary of Midwestern Literature.” Volume one, published by Indiana University Press in 2001, presented the lives, significance, major works, and criticism on almost 400 Midwestern authors. Volume two, projected for 2008 publication, details Midwestern literary sites, centers, movements, city and state literatures, genres and pivotal works.
