Language Patterns:

• I like to (watch TV).

• I don’t like to (ice-skate).

• Ken went to the zoo. Ken saw a tiger. Ken went to the zoo and he saw a tiger.

• Ken and his father went to the movies. They ate popcorn. Ken and his father went to the movies, and they ate popcorn.

• I like to (watch movies).

• I don’t like to (swim).

• I like to watch (sport shows).

Materials:

One set of Picture Cards for each student; game pieces for each student; index cards with: We, they, he, she; markers, crayons; drawing paper

Into Activities

Warm-up/Accessing prior knowledge (10 minutes)

Welcome the class. Give each student a set of cut out Picture Cards. Show the Picture Card for watch TV. Nod your head to show approval and say, I like to watch TV. Ask students to hold up the same Picture Card and repeat after you. Continue with the Warming Up activities on page 81.

Through Activities

Page 81 Student Book (15 minutes)

Have the students open their books to page 81. Ask students to identify the key vocabulary and to tell what each person likes or doesn’t like to do. Play the recording and point to each word as it is said. Follow the instructions for Using Page 81. You will need the cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 82 Student Book (15 minutes)

Help students find page 82 in their books Ask students to identify key vocabulary. Play the recording. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity. Ask students who are at a higher level of language proficiency to share their work with the rest of the class. Follow the remainder of the Instructions for Using Page 82.

Page 82 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do Having Fun: Information Gap Activity. Give each student a set of Picture Cards and a game piece Students should stand a notebook up between them so that they can’t see each others card. Follow the remainder of the Instructions for Information Gap Activity on page 82 of the Teacher’s Guide.

Page 83 Student Book (10 minutes)

Help students find page 83 in their books. Allow students to talk about the pictures and encourage them to use he and she and doesn’t. Play the recording. Students listen to the sentences and repeat. Continue with the rest of the instructions for Using Page 83. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 84 Student Book (10 minutes)

Help students find page 84 in their books. Point to each picture and ask students to identify the key vocabulary. Play the recording. Students listen to the sentences and repeat them Point to the corresponding picture. Follow the rest of the directions for Using Page 84 and help students complete the page in their books. Students at a lower level of language proficiency may ask other students to check their work.

Page 84 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do Having Fun! Silly Sentences. Ahead of time, write these adjectives on index cards: sad, scary, boring, interesting, exciting, funny. On a second set of index cards, write movies, TV shows, nature shows, sports, and cartoons. Place the adjective index cards in one pile face down. Place the show cards in a second pile face down. Turn over the top card in each pile and say, (Nature shows) are (scary). Follow the rest of the directions for Having Fun! Silly Sentences on page 84 of the Teacher’s Guide.

Nutrition Break/Snack Time – (20 Minutes)

Page 85 Teacher’s Guide (10 minutes)

Do Warming Up on page 85. Ahead of time, write the pairs of sentences on page 85 in Warming Up on the board. Allow space to write new sentences. Next, invite two students to come up and choose a pair of sentences Continue with the rest of the directions for Warming Up on page 85.

Page 85 Student Book (10 minutes)

Help student turn the pages in their books to page 85. Ask student to talk about the pictures. Play the recording and remind students to point to each word as they read. Continue with the rest of the directions for Using Page 85. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 86 Student Book: (10 minutes)

Help students find page 86 in their books. Read the directions and ask students to read with you. Read the sentences in each column. Then, continue with the rest of the directions for Using Page 86.

Page 86 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do Having Fun! Combination Sentences. Ahead of time write these subject pronouns on index cards: We, They, He, She. Place them facedown in a pile. Model the activity. Follow the remainder of the directions for Having Fun! Combination Sentences on page 86.

Page 87 Student Book (15 minutes)

Help students find page 87 in their books. Use Picture Cards to review the vocabulary. Place the Picture Cards along the ledge of the chalkboard and ask individual students: “What do you like to do?” Students respond, “I like to (eat pizza). Play the recording. Model and ask students to follow along and point to each word in the chant as they listen. Point to the Picture Cards as you say the chant with students. Continue with the rest of the directions for Using Page 87.

You will need a cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 88 Student Book (5 minutes)

Show students the Picture cards for this unit and review the activities with them.

Ask them to find pictures of these activities in their books.

Page 88 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Help students find page 88 in their books. Read the sentences at the top of the page and explain that Paul likes to watch TV. He likes to watch sports. Sport shows are exciting. Continue with the remainder of the instructions for Using Page 88.

Beyond Activities

If teachers have extra time, they can do the following ten-minute activities:

1. See page 84 in the Teacher’s Guide: Having Fun! Illustrate It.
