BOSWELL HIGH SCHOOL

January 8, 2019

BOS Family,

I know you just heard from me yesterday, but this email will focus directly on Advanced Academics. As we end the first semester and transition into the second semester, we also begin the process of Personal Course Selection (PCS). Our counselors meet with students in groups and one on one to assist in making the best selection for each individual student based on their Personal Graduation Plan. With that said, I want to focus on the learning opportunities we have scheduled for parents in regards to Advanced Academics.

First and foremost, “Advanced Academics” consists of three types of courses: 1) Advanced Placement; 2: Dual Credit; and 3) On Ramps. Through each of these types of courses college credit may be attained if criteria is met. Therefore, to assist you in assisting your student in selecting the type of course appropriate for him/her we have three targeted opportunities in the next few weeks. The first is an information meeting on Personal Course Selection and Dual Credit. This meeting is held on January 9 in the Kirk Watson Lecture Hall at 6:00 PM. If you are unable to attend the meeting at Boswell High School, our sister schools are offering the same information on January 10, 2019 at CTHS at 6:30 PM and January 14, 2019 at SHS at 6:00 PM. If you are unable to attend any of the above meetings, please contact our lead counselor, Chris Bell, at cbell@ems- and he will ensure you receive the information.

The second opportunity focuses on the differences between Advanced Placement, Dual Credit and On Ramps. This session, A Night of Advanced Academics, will be held on January 30, 2019 at 6:00 PM in the Kirk Watson Lecture Hall. Our advanced academics teachers will host breakout sessions on BOS’ specific offerings.

The third opportunity is through Donuts with Davis and the opportunity to have a conversation with me about our Advanced Academics opportunities and offerings. This will be held at 8:30 AM on January 24, 2019 in the Library. I will share my first hand experiences of my own children who took two different routes (one AP and the other Dual Credit) to attain college credit while in high school. Although this will be shared in full detail, both of my children entered college with 3-6 hours away from classification as a sophomore and saved my husband and I well over $15,000 in tuition, books and housing.

If you are unable to attend any of the above events, but would like more information, please contact our College and Career Readiness Specialist, Jocelyn McBride, at jmcbride@ems-

In addition, our counseling department will host a Coffee with Counselors on January 15th 8:30 to 9:30 in Suite C. The topic is “All about Scheduling.” I encourage you to connect with our counselors through Remind. Counselors use Remind to send out important information and reminders about upcoming events and deadlines. There are accounts set up for each grade level. Below you will find how to be added to the distribution list. Make sure to use the correct code for your graduating class. If you signed up last year, you do not need to sign up again.
