Re: Freedom of Information Request

Thank you for your request for information made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 which was received into this office on 16th April 2019.

You Asked for:

1. How many people with Type 1 and Type 2 currently live in the Wirral area? (If I can have these numbers separately, that would be great)

2. If you have any statistical evidence, how many of this population suffer with any mental health issues (depression, anxiety, diabetes, distress, self-neglect)?

3. Do you know if any of the GPs on the Wirral routinely screen their diabetic patients for psychological problems? If so, can you provide the tools or pathways that they are using?

4. Do you know of any primary Multidisciplinary Team’s (MDT’s) that include a psychologist or work closely with the mental health team?

5. Can I please have some up to date information on what programmes there are on the Wirral for people with the condition already? (Not the diabetic prevention programme)

6. Does NHS Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) think that diabetic patients (or patients with any long term conditions) should be assessed regularly for psychological problems? If not, why is this not of importance?

Our Response:

1. Diabetes Type 1: 1,665

Diabetes Type 2: 18,191

2. The number of diabetics who live on the Wirral and are on the Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF) Depression Register is 3467.

3. NHS Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is not aware of routine screening; however, GPs should be aware of the impact. There is an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service for all patients within the Wirral area that GPs can refer into when required. GP’s have also been briefed as part of GP members meetings about the links between Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) and long term conditions.

4. The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service can be linked into as required. There are therapists present at some GP practices but a full Multidisciplinary Team approach is not practiced at this stage.

5. For people with Diabetes on the Wirral, there is a local structured education programme called ‘Diabetes Smart’ which provides module based education. This is for pre-diabetics, Type 1 and Type 2.

This programme does not currently include psychological support; however, the separate Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service is available. The service does also run specific, long-term condition group delivery sessions, of which Diabetes is included.

6. There are plans to look at more targeted support for people with diabetes and long term conditions in the future. Links have been made with Mental Health colleagues who will be attending the Diabetes Steering Group, which is a partnership group across all providers and primary care.

We hope this information is useful, however if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Corporate Affairs Team (contact details at the top of this letter)
