HW: Fallacies of argument
Choose an opinion article of min. 350 words from any online Hungarian daily. Identify as many of these fallacies in the article as possible:
a) ad populum
b) ad hominem
c) straw man
d) red herring
e) false dichotomy
f) circular argument (begging the question)
g) equivocation
h) false dichotomy
i) post hoc
j) missing the point
k) slippery slope
Your article should contain at least 3 types of these argumentative fallacies. If you fail to find three different types, choose another article.
Before you start the quest for argumentative fallacies in the article, make sure you are familiar with these types of fallacies. Check the definitions and the examples here:
Your analysis of the fallacies should proceed in the following way:
✓ Give the precise source of the article (author, title, title of the online daily, date of post, URL).
✓ Summarize the content of the article in English. First state the author’s thesis (main point), then list the arguments that the author uses to support her own view.
✓ Identify the passages (a sentence, several sentences or a whole paragraph) with the fallacy and quote it in quotation marks.
✓ Identify the type of argumentative fallacy (a-k) you can identify in the passages and support your answer. Explain why you think that a passage illustrates one of the argumentative fallacies above. Also explain how the author could have avoided the argumentative fallacy.
