Introduction

There are many functions performed in organisations on a daily basis. Each has its role in terms of enabling the business as a whole to achieve its goals. The managers of these functions, therefore, must not only have the expert knowledge of their functional area, but they must also be aware of how their departments fit into the organisational structure and can support the other areas.

This video uses the Holden Limited (part of General Motors) to show these concepts at work. In particular the Manufacturing Operations, Human Resources, Marketing and Sales and the Finance Departments are explored as parts which make up the whole of the company.

Divide the class into groups. Each group is to look at one or two of the above pages, then summarise the information available for the rest of the class in a brief oral presentation.

From the Home Page (.au), select the careers page. On the left hand side there is a list of all of the departments that make up Holden. Groups could select either the departments that are shown in the video or those that are not discussed in the video (or all departments!), looking at what their function is. This information could be presented in posters showing:

What the department is What its main functions are How it fits into the entire organisation

Then have a gallery viewing of all of the posters! Students could work their way around the room, reading the information presented in the other posters. Finally, students could discuss which functional area is most important to the operation of Holden Ltd. Could the organisation exist without any of the functional areas? Would Holden benefit from outsourcing any of the functions?
