Types of Characters

Main Characters:

• Essential to the story

• Without him/her, there would be no story

• Protagonist: one with whom our sympathies lie

• Antagonist: the opposition to the protagonist

• Static character – one who remains unchanged throughout

• Dynamic character – one who changes as a result of the events in the story

• Flat character: presented around a single quality; lacks substance (boring)

• Round character: similar to a person in real life as they can be complex and difficult to explain; reader begins to understand the “whole” person

Minor Characters:

• At one or more points, these characters change the plot

• There would still be a story without the person, but it would be a different story

Incidental Characters:

• These characters do not influence the plot

• They may provide interest, realism, humour, etc.
