QUESTION

Did you know that our oceans are in trouble? Even though we don’t live in a coastal town, there are things that we do every day that affect the oceans. What can you and your friends do to help save the oceans? Sometimes the best way to help is to educate others. By creating a video, slideshow or web page to present information to others in our community, people will be more aware of how their actions affect the oceans.

PLAN

Our plan begins with brainstorming the information we already know about the ocean’s characteristics and types of pollution. We will use the KWHL chart to list things we want to know about the ocean that may aid in our presentations and decide how we will find out the things we want to know. Next, we will spend time researching on the web and with the library resources. We will use storyboards to layout the information we want to present in our video, slides, or web page. Our project goal is to create an informative presentation to share with family and friends that will teach them about the ocean and pollution. Each presentation should include facts, pictures, and original ideas. Hopefully our presentations will make everyone think more about how their daily actions affect the oceans.

COOPERATIVE TEAMS [pic]

The class will be divided into small teams. Each team member will have a specific task. Your team will not be able to succeed if you do not do your part and encourage your classmates to do theirs. Everyone needs to work together for the common goal. The team positions are as follows:

Team Leader: This person is in charge of organization and focus. Keeping the team on task and on schedule is your priority.

Producer: This person is in charge of directing the presentation. Though you will have guidance with the technical aspects of the project, you should be the most experienced with whichever type of presentation your team decides to make. You will help your team members create the video, slides, or web page, making their ideas into reality.

Researcher: More than one person will have this job. Each researcher needs to work with the team to find the information needed to make a great presentation.

RESOURCES

These are the web resources you can use to learn more about oceans and pollution. You do not have to use all resources, but it may be good to look at a few different ones to refine your ideas and broaden your project.

SCHEDULE

First Week: Brainstorming phase. What information will be best to include in a video or other presentation to help your friends and family learn more about the ocean? Think about past experiences and things you have learned in class. As a class, use the KWHL chart for general brainstorming. Class then divides into teams and does team brainstorming to decide what to focus on in the presentation. Teams write up short proposal and self-assign positions. Pick the type of presentation you will make, then turn in proposal and positions to teacher for approval and suggestions.

Second and Third Week: Given time during class to research information for presentations. Pick which information is the most important to include in your video, slides, or web page. Gather pictures to use in your slides or web page, or props for your video. Begin to think about what the final product will look like. Remember to stay focused!

Fourth Week: Use the storyboards or other planning organizer to create a layout for your presentation. The teacher will provide examples and instruction on how to make a good storyboard. Save this phase of the planning! Teams will turn in storyboards as part of their final presentation.

Fifth and Sixth Week: Each team will meet with the teacher to discuss the technical aspects of the project. Teacher will train Producers from each team to help group with the medium selected (video, PowerPoint, web design). During class teams will work on their presentations. The presentations should have a clear message, accurate facts, and graphics. Teams may choose to meet outside of class to work on their presentations more. When all the teams have completed their projects, students will present to the rest of the class and critique each other. At this point we will make the presentations available to share with other classes and our own families to help educate the community.

PROJECT

This project will educate students about the ocean and the problems of pollution, as well as spread the word to others through multimedia presentations. Students will use what they learned to make suggestions on how to decrease the damage we do to the oceans in our everyday lives. Their creativity and technology skills will be used to make a presentation that will increase community awareness.

ASSESSMENT

This project had more than once goal in mind for students. Learning about oceans and pollution were the most obvious, but the other things learned along the way were no less important. The ability to learn something new, understand it, and pass it on to others in a multimedia presentation can be difficult, but the results make the student understand the subject more fully. Working in a group with specific tasks assigned to each individual makes group work more than just collaboration. Carrying your own weight in the group becomes more important in situations like that; students become more aware of group dynamics and their own strengths and weaknesses in the group.

Students were assessed on their work in teams on the planning and follow-through of the project, as well as on the multimedia portion of the project. Students should complete a self/team assessment to be turned in at the end of the project. Rubrics are attached.
