Classifying Chemical Reactions Lab

Objectives:

▪ perform and classify six different reactions

▪ identify the reactants and products of each reaction

▪ write and balance equations for each reaction

Materials: Materials will be provided for you at each station. You MUST wear goggles at all times, or you will be removed from the lab.

Procedure:

1. This lab is divided into 6 stations. At each station you will receive the specific procedure for the reaction to be performed.

2. At each station, perform the reaction required, paying special attention to any safety information.

3. Record the reactants for each reaction on your data table.

4. Make and record observations for each reaction (there is a column for this provided on your data table). Include things like: color changes, precipitate formed, gas formation, temperature changes, or other evidence of energy being released.

Data Table:

Conclusion:

1. How can you tell if a chemical reaction has occurred? Mention what were the distinctive changes that you observed in each of the reactions in the lab.

2. How can you use the just reactants to determine what type of reaction is going to occur? Name at least one hint that you could give a classmate for being able to identify the type of reaction.

Extension:

1) NaBr + Ca(OH)2 ( CaBr2 + NaOH Type of reaction: _________________________________

2) NH3+ H2SO4 ((NH4)2SO4 Type of reaction: _________________________________

3) C5H9O + O2 ( CO2 + H2O Type of reaction: _________________________________

4) Pb + H3PO4 ( H2 + Pb3(PO4)2 Type of reaction: _________________________________

5) HgO ( Hg + O2 Type of reaction: _________________________________

Be creative: Come up with an analogy for one of the types of reactions above. Explain it below in full sentences or draw pictures.
