September 10 (Monday)
Era I: Human Origins and Early Civilizations, Prehistory to 1000 b.c. (b.c.e.)
By the end of this unit, students will demonstrate knowledge of early development of humankind from the Paleolithic Era to the agricultural revolution by:
1. Explaining the impact of geographic environment on hunter-gatherer societies.
2. Listing characteristics of hunter-gatherer societies, including their use of tools and fire.
3. Describing technological and social advancements that gave rise to stable communities.
4. Explaining how archaeological discoveries are changing present-day knowledge of early peoples.
By the end of today’s block, you should be able to explain:
1. The basics of prehistory and early man, including the five hominid types.
2. The transition from Paleolithic to Neolithic and the importance of the Neolithic Revolution.
Part I – Quiz: Chapter 1, Sections 1 and 2 (20 minutes) Individual
Using the outlines you created for your homework, you will take this quiz based on the informtion you read in Chapter 1, Sections 1 and 2. You will staple your outlines to the quiz so that you can earn credit for the homework assignment in addition to the quiz.
Part II – Finish Lecture: Early Man (25 minutes) Whole Class
Pay attention and take notes as we discuss early man and the five hominid types. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. After we have completed the lecture, complete the brief review sheet to make sure you truly know your hominids!
Part III – How Different Was It? (30 minutes) Individual/Partner
Using the Then and Now sheet, begin to think about how different life was for hominids from the lives we currently live. Fill in the blanks with thoughtful answers as to how the lives of these early humans were similar and different to our own.
Part IV – Paleolithic to the Neolithic Revolution (Time Remaining) Whole Class
Pay attention and take notes as we discuss the fundamental features of the Paleolithic period and how this changed drastically with the coming of the Neolithic Revolution. As always, ask any questions you may have.
Homework:
The following assignments are due NEXT CLASS (September 12):
1. Read AND Outline Chapter 1, Section 3 using the method that was modeled in class.
2. Write a thesis paragraph comparing the two hominids that I assign you. Your paragraph should be at least three sentences with a valid similarity and a valid difference.
3. Begin studying for your Era I test on Friday, September 14.
The following assessment will occur on September 14:
1. Era I Unit Test – from Prehistory through the Neolithic Revolution (Chapter 1, Sections 1 to 3).
The following assignment will be due September 18:
1. Read AND Outline Chapter 1, Section 3 using the method that was modeled in class.
