Typescript and Self-Analysis

Skills Tape #1

Objective: To produce a 15 + minute (but no longer than 20 minute) recording in which you demonstrate basic verbal and nonverbal listening and attending skills.

Evaluation: Each of the nine phenomena below will be evaluated:

1. Use of silence

2. Verbal minimal encouragers

3. Reflection of content/paraphrase.

4. Reflection of feelings.

5. No more than three questions (open and/or closed) asked (except open invitation to talk at the beginning);

6. Show understanding of perception of “client’s” reactions to reflections and respond appropriately.

7. Nonverbal listening skills (physical attending, tracking and focusing)

8. Appropriate management of interview (structuring the beginning, the middle, and the end).

Procedure: Pair with a fellow classmate for this assignment. Pairing will be done on the 2nd class day.

“Client Role”: when playing the role of the client, you are to discuss an actual issue or concern in your life. If you feel uncomfortable sharing this information (as these tapes will be reviewed in class), you can make up an issue or concern. Please note, the issue or concern you bring to the session should NOT cover content or situations that are not developmentally appropriate for your “Counselor” (i.e. Trauma, Sexual Abuse, Suicidality/Homicidal/ Bi-polar or Psychosis, Drug addiction, etc).

As the “client” in these tapes, focus your attention on yourself, not on how your “counselor” is doing. You will help the most by letting him/her be responsible for their own self-awareness. Be honest with your “counselor” regarding how accurately you feel understood by him or her.

Turn in your tape and self-evaluation using the format provided below.

Basic Skills Self-Analysis Instructions

Guidelines for Typescript

1. Transcribe verbatim your counseling session. (There should be 12 or more Counselor responses of the videotaped session. Students will receive a letter grade reduction for each less than 12). Minimal encourages (e.g., hm…mmhmm…yes…ok) are not considered a verbal response. They are to be included or embedded within the larger responses.

2. After each of your responses provide a self-critique on the response. Also, provide a better response if you think you could improve upon your original response. This is an opportunity for you to process what you were experiencing (thoughts, feelings, and actions) during the session. The following questions may guide your reflection about your responses (CACREP II-J-1-e; II-J-3-b; II-J-3-d) (DPI 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 3.11):

a. What would have been an appropriate goal for your response at that time?

b. What was the effect of the response - in other words, what did your response lead your

client to do?

c. Did you think you could have provided a better response? If yes, what would it be? If

a corrected response is needed, what is your reason for making that change? Provide

the response.

d. What were you thinking or feeling about yourself as a counselor or your work as a

counselor when the client said that?

3. Based on your responses, complete the Counseling Skills Analysis Chart.

4. Complete the Overall Session Self-Critique.

5. The video of the session as well as the Transcription and analysis (doc file) must be submitted to me by uploading both to the shared Google Drive. Specific instructions to be given in class.

6. Please do a quick “test” prior to recording your session to make sure your tape will be audible. Sessions that are not clearly audible will be returned (ungraded).
