COURSE DESCRIPTION

• This course will train students to operate the keyboard by touch with good speed and accuracy. Students will learn to follow both oral and written directions with minimal assistance. They will also learn to format and type basic business documents attractively and free from errors.

Length of Course: 36 Weeks

Periods per Week: Five

Curriculum: Business Education

Unit: 1 Credit

Grading: Percentage

Prerequisite(s): none

Materials:

• Century 21 Keyboarding and Information Processing, Copyright 2000, South-Western.

• Line Rollering: A Keyboarding Simulation, Copyright 1996, South-Western.

• Additional handouts/worksheets distributed by the teacher.

I. Learning Objective:

A. Reinforcement of basic keyboarding skills

1. Students will type by touch, display proper posture, and use proper keystroking patterns.

2. Students will type without looking at their keyboard.

B. Speed and Accuracy Development

1. Students will strive to earn a “C” average or better on timed writings.

2. Students will strive to improve on their speed and/or accuracy progressively.

C. Proofreading

1. Students will correctly proofread all work by finding errors and correcting them.

2. Students will have ample time to proofread.

D. Typing script and statistical copy

1. Students will type from script copy and a statistical copy by touch.

E. Centering horizontally and vertically

1. Students will correctly format and type problems using MS Word vertical and horizontal placement.

F. Formatting and typing business letters

1. Students will correctly format and type business letters using proper placement for all letter parts.

G. Addressing envelopes

1. Students will type addresses on small and large envelopes following specific guidelines, and using MS Word.

H. Correcting errors

1. Students will learn how to identify and correct mistakes on MS Word by using the backspace and delete keys.

2. Students will detect and correct errors on their own.

I. Alignment

1. Students will align columns and rows by using the tabulation process in MS Word.

J. Outline

1. Students will use the outline feature in MS Word to complete the typing of an outline.

K. Reports

1. Students will identify the correct formation of one-page, multiple, bound, and unbound reports.

2. Students will use proper spacing for headings, paragraphs, footnotes and endnotes.

3. Students will use headers and footers when necessary.

L. Simple Tables

1. Students will insert, format and change simple table in MS Word.

M. Letter and punctuation styles

1. Students will format and type business letters using block, modified block, open or mixed punctuation.

N. Following directions

1. Students will follow both oral and written directions exactly on all exercises.
