Wintrax Version 1.4.x Upgrade

Newsletter and Installation Notes (10105a)

Dear Customer,

Thank you for choosing Wintrax for your music control needs. These notes provide valuable information regarding installation and upgrade. Current users must now obtain a “username” and “password” in order to download updates. All current users, who download versions later than and including 1.4.x, also need to have a new “registration name and code”. New users will receive the newer registration codes on their invoice.

Please, try not phone for the new codes. Please send an e-mail with your name, current registration code, e-mail address, and telephone number to password@. You will receive the codes within 24 hours in most cases. It is not critical that you upgrade immediately to version 1.4.x, so don’t panic. Once you've received your new codes, please be sure to write them in your user manual or on your invoice for future reference.

Recently, with the many changes in the Windows operation system, we’ve had a few problems that have put a kink in our once simple installation procedures. Please review this document before installing, just in case you encounter one of these problems. It could save you some time and frustration.

Also, please be sure to read the WTNOTES.TXT file that is in your WINTRAX directory for recent release notes that do not appear in the operators manual.

BASIC INSTALLATION

1). Shut down all background tasks (see paragraph below if you need help on that).

2). Insert the first of the three install diskettes into you’re A: or B: drive.

3). From the Windows START button, select “Run…”.

4). In the “OPEN:” dialog box type “A:\SETUP.EXE” (without the quotes of course)

5). Change the diskettes when prompted to do so, and click "OK" each time to continue.

Some of the three diskettes may not copy any files in. This means the files on that diskette are already installed on your computer system and were found in the Windows registry.

INSTALLATION or UPGRADE ERROR

Should you receive any errors during the initial installation or full upgrade, it is likely due to a problem with InstallShield not reporting back the correct error on certain versions and updates of Windows 95/98 or ME.

To resolve the problem: Terminate all background tasks except for SYSTRAY and EXPLORER. To do this, Win95/98/ME users should press CTRL-ALT-DEL "ONCE". Select a task from the CLOSE PROGRAM list, then select "END TASK" for each task, except those two. Then begin the installation again. If you still are having problems, then check the Error Message DETAILS button to see where the error is coming from. If it is InstallShield, then you still have some tasks running in the background. Rebooting the PC after the install, will reactivate all tasks that you ended using this method and all should be back to normal after that.

Should you receive an error reporting “Runtime 453 Error”, then the problem is caused by the installation not updating the Windows registry properly, usually due to an aborted installation. To resolve the problem go to the Windows START button, and select “Programs”, then select “MSDOS Prompt”.

At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type: "DEL C:\WINDOWS\PIO_DLL.DLL" (then press ENTER).

It should report back that one file was deleted. Then at the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type:

"DEL C:\WINDOWS\PSR_DLL.DLL" (then press ENTER). It should report back that one file was deleted.

Once again at the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, to return back to WINDOWS, type: EXIT (and then press ENTER)

Now re-install WINTRAX. There is no need to UNINSTALL it. The installation should complete and all should be fine afterwards. When updating with a FULL installation set, your current CD database will not be overwritten.

CABLE CONNECTIONS: SONY SETUP

The Wintrax Sony changer cable has four 1/8” (3.5 mm) PLUGS on it. It is a four-changer cable. The plugs are usually labeled with numbers 1 through 4. Unlike the Pioneer changers, there is only ONE connection per changer. Plug the number 1 plug into changer #1’s LEFT “S-Link/Control-A1” jack. Set the “Command Mode” switch on the back of the changer to “CD-1”.

Repeat the same process for each changer you connect. Please note that you set the “Command Mode” switch to “CD-1” on every changer, not just changer #1. In the Wintrax Setup / Preferences, select “Sony 200/300 (Sw-1)” for each changer and set the active check box to the left of the Player Type.

Should you be mixing Sony 100-discs changers with Sony 200/300’s, OR should you be mixing Sony and Pioneer changers together, please call or e-mail for special instructions.

Should the cables not be marked, then use the wire colors to determine the correct wires: Red/Green=Changer 1, Blue/Black=Changer 2, Yellow=Changer 3, and White=Changer 4. Changers 3 and 4 get their ground connection via your audio connections and will work once you have your changers connected to your audio mixer.

CABLE CONNECTIONS: PIONEER SETUP

The Wintrax Pioneer changer cable has two 1/8” (3.5 mm) PLUGS and two 3/32” (2.5 mm) PLUGS on it. It is a two-changer cable. The 1/8” plugs are usually labeled with numbers 1 and 2. Unlike the Sony changers, there are TWO connections per changer. The 3/32” plugs have a black stripe on the wire for changer 1 and two black stripes for changer 2. Some Pioneer changers do not have a CD-Synchro connection.

Connect plug #1 (1/8” plug) into the “Control In” jack for changer #1. Plug the number 1 3/32” plug in to the “CD Synchro” jack on changer #1. If there is no Synchro jack, turn off End-Of-Message in Wintrax Setup. Repeat the same process for each changer you connect. In the Wintrax Setup / Preferences, select “Pioneer 25-50-100/101” or “Pioneer 300 or ADPD-1” for each changer and set the active check box to the left of the Player Type.

DO NOT use the Master/Slave jacks on the changers. See the other notes below. Should you be mixing Sony and Pioneer changers together, please call or e-mail for special instructions.

Should the cables not be marked, then use the wire colors to determine the correct wires: Red=Changer 1 Control In, Blue=Changer 2 Control In, Yellow=Changer 1 CD Synchro, and White=Changer 2 CD Synchro. Changer 2 gets it ground connection via your audio connections. Be sure to connect the spade lug with the green and black wires to a screen on the chassis of changer #1.

Also, the Pioneer 301-discs changers have a POSITIVE action ON and OFF switch. By pressing the switch IN then the software can turn the changers on and off. If the switch is OUT then Wintrax cannot turn the changers ON.

OTHER NOTES

TO SLAVE OR NOT TO SLAVE

NOT! The new 301 changer has a master/slave configuration that allows two changers to act as one for the purpose of using a SINGLE IR remote control to control both. Doing this pre-empts the ability to precue the next song ahead of time for good smooth overlaps. Wintrax does not support this feature. Wintrax will only allow 300 discs per player. Also the SLAVE audio jacks are not pass-through.

They mute depending on which changer is playing, so they do not work as a passive mixer. For mixer instructions see our web site at and click on the AUDIO MIX info button.

CD TEXT CAPABILITIES

In a future release we will add CD-Text uploading for changers that support this feature. This will allow you to dump the album name and album artist to the changer so it displays while a song for a given CD is playing. Of the Pioneer models, currently only the 301-discs changers have CD-Text abilities. Of the Sony's some late model 200's, 300's, and 400's do. Currently very few CD's have CDText on them. The CDText display can show you 12 characters each from the Album name and Artist name on the front display of the player. In that future update, we'll add two new fields in the database record for this data and the ability to mass upload this information to the players from Wintrax. This will again reduce your typing headaches. If no text is entered in the new fields you will be given the option to upload the current Album name and Artist name fields already existing in the record.

Users who have purchased Pioneer controllers (PSR-4P or PSR8-P) can develop routines for their programs that upload text for all CD's. Contact us by e-mail if you need the extra information. We'll e-mail it to you.

DVD Changers

Pioneer and Sony have released 200 & 300 DVD changers. These changers are currently selling for about $599-to-$899, street price. As usual, Sony changed the communication protocol again, to something called "Control-A1 II". We are working to figure it out. Meanwhile, we highly recommend the Pioneer 300-discs DVD, since we will release drivers for them first. Also Pioneer changers have shown to be more mechanically sound over the 10 years that we've supported them. Also, you'll get 100 more slots than the Sony unit.

ALBUM SCREEN DISPLAY

There is a glitch in the ScreenSaver that when used in automatic mode; it sometimes stalls the play list. Therefore, please manually bring it up by clicking the SCREENSAVER option. You have to wait 10 secs after a song starts or after the next song has cued to bring it up the first time. If you notice that on the screen-saver the countdown timer doesn't start, drop the screen and bring it back up again. Also, set the screen saver value to "0" to disable it, if you don't want to use it.

REMEMBER: You can still manually bring it up from the hot spot on the main screen menu. It can be dropped by double-clicking the song counter OR by pressing ALT + ~ (Alt-Tilde).

DIGITAL AUDIO

We will be adding MPG-Layer-3 digital audio playing in a near future release. Please watch the web site for details and the release date. Regarding digital audio, some have had problems running back-to-back digital wave audio files. The problem is that Windows tells us the audio is over while audio card actually still has data in the buffers. An easy work-around is to add a 3-second "pause cut" after each back-to-back cut (see manual). This will allow the buffer to flush before trying to start another file on the audio card. There will usually NOT be a three-second delay, since the audio from the previous cut will still be playing during that delay time. You may have to experiment, since some cards buffer more audio than others do.

Please visit our site regularly and read the newsletter and watch for version updates that add features or correct

problems. For the latest version, go to and select the DOWNLOAD DEMO/UPGRADE button. Check the version number shown on the top left of the Wintrax screen (or HELP, ABOUT). If the version on the download page is greater than your version, you may download and install the new version. You will need the username and password, which is available to e-mailing us at members@. We need your registration name, and registration code, invoice number, and current e-mail address to respond to. It is your responsibility to keep your software on the latest version.
