If you follow the rules, you should be able to type perfectly the examples you see here. Please type in the gray areas on the screen. After you type, check carefully to be sure your typing and the examples are exactly the same except for colors. Type in black (default color).

1. Typing hiragana: First, type Roman letters. You type ‘ho’ for ほ, ‘ju’ forじゅ, and ‘mittsu’ for みっつ, for example. Hit Enter if you have typed what you intended, and then the underlining will disappear. Edit the letters by using Backspace and retyping before hitting Enter.

2. Long vowels and particles: You have to type the Roman letters to match the correct hiragana spelling, not to match the pronunciation. (Sometimes you must type something different from Roomaji spelling as you have seen.) For example, you have to type ‘toukyou’ for とうきょう, neither ‘tokyo’ nor ‘tookyoo.’

3. Typing katakana: After typing in the hiragana and before hitting Enter, hit F7 and then the space bar. Use a hyphen for a long vowel extender.

4. A dot between two Katakana words: Hit ‘?/’ key.

5. Special sounds in katakana words: Usually you can type these as they are written in Roman letters (e.g. Type ‘ye’ for イェ), but some of them may need some tricks. Also if you simultaneously type ‘l’ (for little) and a vowel, the letter will become small.

6. Now, can you type your full name correctly? Don’t forget to type a dot between your first and last names.

7. Tying whole phrases or sentences: If the phrase or sentence you want to type is short enough, you may be able to type the whole phrase or sentence and convert it into kanji at once. Your computer also recognizes quite a few commonly used katakana words such as アメリカ or スペイン, and converts them into katakana automatically when you hit the space bar. For the following examples, type the whole phrase or sentence and convert them at once.

7. Using quotation marks: Type [ and ] for the Japanese quotation marks 「　and　」.
