MEET TIME: 1:00 pm

WELCOME: Welcome to the final home meet of the 2004-05 season for the Cobbers. As is tradition, today will be marked as a special day for the Cobber senior class. This year’s class has only two members but Emily Hall and Megan Johnson are living proof that it is quality and not quantity that makes a program. Both athletes have made their mark on the program and both will be remembered for a long time to come…after today’s meet, the Cobbers will have two more dual meets and one invitational before the MIAC Conference Meet on February 17-19 at the University of Minnesota.

TODAY’S MEET - THE INSIDE SCOOP

Not a Bad Way to Spend Your Christmas Vacation!

The Concordia swimming and diving team traveled to Florida over Christmas break for a holiday training trip. The Cobbers stayed on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida near Clearwater. The team trained from December 27 - January 2 at an outdoor park facility that had a competition swimming pool as well as a diving area. Julie Lucier’s team takes a southern trip every other year. Other Christmas break destinations for the Cobbers have included Hawaii and the Bahamas.

There Is No “I” in Relay!

Year in and year out one of the strengths of the Cobber swimming and diving program is the relay teams. This year is no exception. In their last meet before Christmas, Concordia’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Cami Hendrickson, Katie Lee, Jana Hemstad and Megan Johnson broke the five-year-old pool record by less than a second. Their time of 8:39.55 knocked the St. Thomas relay team from 1999 out of the record book and currently ranks them third in the MIAC in that event.

Freshman Phenoms

Two of the top freshman swimmers in the MIAC will be competing in today’s meet. Ironically, they are on opposite ends of the event list. Concordia’s Cami Hendrickson has been tearing up the sprint charts for the Cobbers while Hamline’s Aly Janzen has showcased her skills in the distance events. Hendrickson already owns the school record, and the MSU-Moorhead pool record, in the 50-yard freestyle and was named the MIAC Swimmer of the Week on November 23. Janzen is currently ranked third in the conference in the 500-yard freestyle (5:28.03) and fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle (19:04.76).

We’ve Already Beaten One MIAC Team, Don’t Make Us Do It Again!

UM-Morris won their first dual meet in school history when they downed Augsburg 66-32 on November 6. The Cougars are in their first year of competition and have posted several solid results since that early-season triangular.

Hamline’s Head Coach

Andy Hanson

Andy Hanson begins his second season at the helm of the Hamline men's and women's swimming and diving program.

Hanson believes that the key to success is the development of all athletes to reach the highest team potential. Workouts are specialized by stroke, distance, and skill level to ensure quality sets. He emphasizes stroke mechanics and specialized drills, breaking down the strokes in a manner appropriate for advanced and learning swimmers.

Hanson earned his bachelor's degree from UW-Eau Claire in 1998, majoring in exercise management and kinesiology. He is currently seeking his master's degree from the U of M in exercise physiology.

UM-Morris’s Head Coach

David Molesworth

David Molesworth has been named the first ever head coach for the University of Minnesota-Morris women’s swimming and diving team that started in the fall of 2004. Molesworth will also serve as aquatics coordinator for the Regional Fitness Center (RFC).

Molesworth received his master's degree in Athletic Administration from the University of South Dakota in 2003 where he served as a graduate assistant for two years. Concordia Last Meet Recap – Concordia 129, St. Kate’s 108

Cobbers' 129-108 Victory Continues Win-Streak Over St. Kate's.

MOORHEAD-- Concordia needed a record-setting performance from their 800-yard freestyle relay team to hold off St. Kate's and keep their winning streak against the Wildcats alive. The Cobbers outscored St. Kate's 129-108 to pick up their first dual win of the season, and raised their win-streak to seven against the Wildcats.

The final three events of the meet put Concordia over the top, as the Cobbers' came from behind to capture the victory. The final event of the afternoon was the most dramatic. The Concordia 800-freestyle relay team of Cami Hendrickson (Fr., Thief River Falls, Minn.), Katie Lee (So., South St. Paul, Minn.), Jana Hemstad (Jr., Milaca, Minn.) and Megan Johnson (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) swam a 8:39.55 to win the race by almost 30 seconds and break the five-year-old pool record by less than a second.

The event was just a curtain call for Lee who had her best meet of the season. Besides the pool record in the relay, she won the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 2:07.73. She also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 5:50.66.

For the second straight meet the diving corps made news. On Friday, Annie Cullen (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) nearly qualified for the NCAA Division III National Meet in the 1-meter competition. Against the Wildcats she posted a national provisionally qualifying mark of 391.20. Teammate Emily Hall (Sr., Minot, N.D.) also provisionally qualified for the national meet with a final total of 381.85. Cullen won the 10-dive event and Hall placed second.

Besides Lee, the other Cobber event winners were Johnson, Hendrickson and Shannon Brown (Jr., Missoula, Mont.). Johnson swam a season-best 2:24.01 to win the 200-yard butterfly by over three seconds. Hendrickson, despite being upset in the 50-yard freestyle, came back to win the 100-free in a time of 57.96. Brown rounded out the quartet of Concordia winners. She posted a 2:43.35 in the 200-yard breaststroke and won by over seven seconds.

TODAY’S OPPONENTS PREVIEWS

HAMLINE - Strong leadership and lofty improvement goals are what the swimming and diving team is hoping will lead to a successful season. “We are looking to improve our win and loss record from last season,” says head coach Andy Hanson, “and this year we have the bodies to do it.”

Since the women’s team won all but one of its dual meets last season, they are entered in tougher meets this year, forcing the team to raise the bar with how they are going to finish. Hanson’s goal for the women’s team in these meets is to continually work hard, improve the team’s times, and “make a respectable meet.”

On the women’s side, the team is headed by senior captain and distance swimmer Adrianne Walls (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior diver Thyra Jagger (White Bear Lake, Minn.). Walls took ninth place last season in the 1000-meter freestyle and eleventh in the 1650-meter freestyle. Jagger placed sixth in the one meter, six dives and tenth in the three meter, six dives. Both women scored points for the Pipers last season at conference and are looking to get in the final heat of their events this year.

With dedicated returning athletes and excited newcomers, the swimming and diving team hopes for a new start this season. Hanson is excited to see what his team can do, and is “looking to make a new name for Hamline in the conference and the nation.”

UM-MORRIS - For the first time in school history, the University of Minnesota-Morris pool will be used for a collegiate meet as the Cougar women’s swimming and diving team will host MSU-Moorhead in the first ever meet for UMM on Friday, October 29.

Head Coach David Molesworth said “I am really excited to be in this position where we are starting a program. I think we have some great potential on our team and the team has already surpassed my expectations in certain areas. This group of women has already put in a lot of time and effort doing something that some of them have not done in 4-5 year (competitive swimming). All teams have to start somewhere and for us October 29th is that place. We are having a lot of fun getting to know each other and I know that this season holds some wonderful things for all of the ladies on the team. I would encourage anyone who has the chance to come and watch this team take its first step”.

Molesworth has a roster of 16 athletes, three of those are divers.
