Overview

The JD/MBA Dual Degree Program was developed for students already accepted into the University of Minnesota Law School. This program serves students who wish to earn an MBA degree as well as their JD degree from the University of Minnesota. To qualify for this option you must be admitted to the Law School in the Fall semester, apply to the Full-Time MBA program during the Fall of your second year in Law School, and be admitted to begin the MBA program in the Fall of the third year.

Both degrees can be completed in 4 years. To complete in this time frame students will carry a very demanding coursework schedule. While the dual degree program enables students to complete in a shorter time frame, it does not diminish the cost nor the number of credits required for each program. Also, please be aware that compromises are necessary to complete this dual degree program, especially upon admission into the MBA portion of the dual degree. Students will need to forgo opportunities such as the law review, moot court, journal publications and specific Law School job search options which may conflict with required courses or other required events for the MBA program.

After acceptance into the dual degree program, students meet with both their JD and MBA advisors after each semester to be sure that their study plans satisfy both the JD and MBA degree requirements.

Planning and Implementing your JD/MBA Dual Degree Program

Once you have been formally accepted by both programs, you should use the attached plan of study to plot out your individual program. You may use 12 credits of transfer work toward each program. Of the 12 credits transferred from the Law School to the MBA Program, you may transfer Contracts (4cr), Property (4cr), and one additional 4 credit Law elective to meet requirements for the MBA degree. You may also transfer 12 credits of MBA coursework toward the Law degree, but pre-approval from the Law School is required.

In planning your program of study, please note that:

1. You must register and pay for two years in the Law School and two years in the MBA Program;

2. You must have a minimum of 88 credits of Law coursework and 63 credits of MBA coursework;

3. You must meet curriculum requirements for both degrees;

4. You must submit two separate Application for Degree forms, one for each degree received.

|JD Degree |MBA Degree |

|76 cr of Law coursework |51 cr of MBA coursework |

|12 cr of MBA coursework |12 cr of Law coursework |
