Population Density: United States - Pamela West's blog

Population Density: United States

Situation: You work for a retail company that plans to open a few new stores but only in the states with the greatest concentration of people.

How will you choose the location?

Population Density is the term that describes the number of individuals occupying an area in relation to the size of that area. In this assignment you will calculate the population density of each US state. You will then use your calculations to create a population density map. In the last part of the assignment you will be asked to analyze the maps you have created.

Procedure:

1. Use the chart given to calculate the population density of each US state and the population density of the entire United States.

2. On the 1st map: use different colors to indicate those states that have a population density greater than the US average and those states with a population density less than the US average.

• Use your lightest color for the “less than” category and your darkest color for the “greater than” category.

• Make a key for the map

3. Analyze the map and answer the following questions

a. What patterns can be seen in the distribution of population densities by state?

b. What inferences can you make by observing the overall spatial distribution?

4. On the 2nd Us map: use different colors to indicate the following ranges of population density

• Less than 70 people per square mile

• Between 70 and 140

• Between 140 and 280

• Between 280 and 560

• 560 or more

• Make a key for the map

5. Analyze the map and answer the following questions

a. What patterns did you observe in the new map?

b. Are there clusters of population, or is it evenly dispersed?

c. What factors could account for the patterns you see?

6. Compare both your population density maps and answer the following questions

a. How does the added detail in the five-category map affect population density observation and interpretation?

b. What conclusions can you draw from the five-category map that you cannot from the two-category map?

c. Which map would you use to determine the states in which to open the new store? Why?

d. Which states would you considered for your new store?

Turn in the following

1. Both population density maps

2. Answers to the 9 questions in complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper

3. 50 point project grade due Tuesday January 19
