WILL UBUNTU OS BE PRELOADED OR PREINSTALLED?

Ubuntu 20.04 will be preinstalled, ready to boot when the unit is powered up.

HOW WILL I RECEIVE UBUNTU LICENSE?

An HP digital end user license agreement (EULA) is included in the preinstalled OS. The user must accept the HP EULA at first boot before using Ubuntu OS. There is no license from Canonical included nor required. The Ubuntu preinstall is comprised of mostly open source software that the customer may use freely as is. WILL I NEED LINUX-READY?

No, the customer does not need to select Linux-ready preinstall in order to get Ubuntu preinstall. The Ubuntu preinstall is a separate SKU from Linux-ready preinstall and is not dependent upon Linux-ready preinstall.

The Linux-ready preinstall option provides the lowest possible cost of OS choice, and Linux-ready is intended to allow the customer to immediately install their own Linux OS image and license to replace the Linux-ready preinstall.

WHAT LANGUAGES ARE AVAILABLE?

One world-wide Ubuntu SKU is orderable. The default language is English and the customer can select a different language when booting the system.

HOW CAN I GET UBUNTU 18.04 (CERTIFIED) FOR THE HP Z4, HP Z6 AND HP Z8 G4?

The 18.04 certification is pending for HP Z4, HP Z6 and HP Z8 G4. Once the certification is complete, HP will provide details on how to obtain the image.

WILL HP PROVIDE DEVICE DRIVERS FOR 18.04 CERTIFICATION ON HP Z4, HP Z6 AND HP Z8 G4?

No, HP will not provide device drivers for certified versions of Ubuntu for any platform. The Canonical software support and update model is that Canonicals provides all kernel and device driver updates through their software update tools and repositories including the NVIDIA? proprietary graphics driver. HP will not provide driver or package updates for outside of Canonical-supported Ubuntu releases.

IS HP ZCENTRAL REMOTE BOOST SUPPORTED ON UBUNTU 20.04 AND UBUNTU 18.04?

Yes, HP ZCentral Remote Boost is supported on Ubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu 18.04. The preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 image includes a desktop shortcut to the HP ZCentral Remote Boost download page.

DOES HP SUPPORT OLDER VERSIONS OF UBUNTU?

Customers are able to download and use older versions of Ubuntu from and can use any version of Linux they choose. HP will not provide technical support for versions of Ubuntu that are not certified for HP hardware, nor for any Linux distribution that is not listed in the Linux hardware matrix.

CAN I UPGRADE TO FUTURE VERSIONS OF UBUNTU? IS THERE A COST TO THE UPGRADE?

When a new version of Ubuntu is available, customers will be able to upgrade through the normal Canonical update mechanism.

There will be no cost to upgrade to future versions of Ubuntu.

If a customer upgrades to a new minor release of the same LTS (e.g. 20.04 > 20.04.1), the system remains certified and supported.

If the customer upgrades to a new major release (e.g. 20.04 > 20.10, or 20.04 > 22.04), they may be updating from a certified version to a non-certified version. Please refer to the HP Linux hardware matrix for the latest information on Ubuntu certified hardware.

CAN I GO TO AN HP SITE TO GET A LATER VERSION? WOULD HP PROVIDE SUCH SITE?

No. HP will not provide OS updates nor updated packages for Ubuntu preinstalls. Customers are expected to use Canonical network update services to obtain updated software.

CAN I BUY UBUNTU PREINSTALL OR LINUX-READY PREINSTALL AND LATER INSTALL WINDOWS 10 USING MY ENTERPRISE LICENSE?

No, per Microsoft licensing terms. Windows volume licenses require an existing qualifying operating system preinstalled as a prerequisite on each PC. Please review your Microsoft Volume-License agreement for specific terms at .

WHAT 'S REQUIRED IF I EVENTUALLY WANT TO CONVERT THIS MACHINE TO A WINDOWS 10 MACHINE?

A Microsoft Windows 10 license must be obtained for each system. Microsoft has several methods to obtain a valid license for a system that was not purchased with Windows 10. The system owner is responsible to ensure the system meets the Microsoft licensing terms. Please review methods to purchase Microsoft Windows 10, . There are no system or configuration limitations that prevent converting an Ubuntu or Linux-Ready system to Windows 10.

CAN THE UBUNTU PREINSTALL COEXIST IN A DUAL BOOT MODE WITH WINDOWS 10?

It is possible to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu. Various resources can be found on the Internet for configuring a system to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu. HP supports them as shipped configuration.

WILL WINDOWS SUBSYSTEM FOR LINUX (WSL) WORK ON WORKSTATIONS TO PROVIDE DUAL OS CAPABILITY-WINDOWS AND UBUNTU?

Yes. Windows users may enable WSL on a Z by HP workstation running Windows 10, and then install their Linux distribution of choice for WSL from the Microsoft Store. Note that the Ubuntu 20.04 version available from the Microsoft Store is the Ubuntu Cloud image certified for virtualized environments and this is different than the HP preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 image which is certified for HP hardware. The HP preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 image can not be installed in the WSL environment.

DOES THE PREINSTALLED UBUNTU 20.04 IMAGE ENABLE USERS TO ROLL BACK TO OLDER VERSIONS?

The ability of a user to clean install, downgrade, or upgrade their system to a different version of Ubuntu is not affected by the preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 image. Users can always install an older, same, or newer version of Ubuntu on their Z by HP workstation via download directly from Canonical.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS FOR UBUNTU 20.04 PREINSTALL?

The primary method is recovery from the preinstalled recovery partition on the system, accessed via F11 per existing HP recovery standard. If the preinstalled system's storage has been compromised, customers can contact HP support to be given access to the recovery image from an HP ftp site.
