PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

( Commit to working 10-12 weeks for 20 hours/week

• Work closely with professors, graduate students, and scientists

( Learn cutting-edge techniques in modern biomedical sciences

( Internship to be performed between June 7 and August 27, 2010

PURPOSE

The purpose of the 2010 Voluntary Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program is to assist students enrolled at LA Mission College in gaining experience and skills essential to earning a BS or BA degree in the natural sciences. This program is a collaborative effort between Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) and California State University, Northridge (CSUN). This is a voluntary program that is intended to increase the number of Mission College students transferring to 4-year schools to earn BS and BA degrees and entering careers in science.

APPLICATION

Students wishing to participate in this program must meet the following minimum requirements to be eligible:

1. completion of 5 or more units at Mission College by June 6, 2010 and be enrolled in at least 4 units at Mission College in the Spring 10 semester.

2. successful completion (A,B,C) of the following: English 28 or equivalent placement; Math 125 (intermediate algebra) or equivalent placement; one semester of college-level Chemistry with lab; and one semester of college-level Life Science with lab; all completed by June 6, 2010.

3. minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better

4. goal is to transfer to a four-year institution to earn an BS/BA in science

5. interest in scientific research as it relates to the basic biomedical sciences

6. ability to commit at least 20 hours/week for 10-12 weeks between June 7 and August 27, 2010

7. must be hard-working, committed, punctual, responsible and be able to work well with others

SELECTION AND PLACEMENT

The Selection Committee will rank candidates in order of priority upon review of the academic record, the letter of reference, and the essays submitted. In some cases, an informal interview may be requested by a member of the committee. Candidates will be contacted by phone or e-mal no later than May 7, 2010. In some cases, students may be informed that they have been placed on a wait list until a final decision is made. Candidates who are awarded summer internships will have an informal interview with the prospective university faculty mentor to discuss the work performed in the lab. The mentor will make the final decision on the acceptance of the student intern.
