BYU STORYLINES

HOME HEROICS: The Cougars won in a fifth-set overtime last week against No. 8 Stanford to remain undefeated at home this

season. The Smith Fieldhouse ranks No. 2 in the nation in average attendance this year with 3,325 coming out each match, trailing Hawai'i by less than 200 fans per match for first place.

PIN-HITTER PROWESS: BYU is led by two hitters on offense this year in freshman Davide Gardini, who has won Off the Block

National Freshman of the Week three times, the most of any player this season, and sophomore opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez, who won AVCA National Player of the Week and Off the Block National Opposite of the Week.

CONFERENCE ELITE: BYU was picked to finish second behind UCLA in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation preseason poll after

winning the regular season title and MPSF championship last season. The Cougars are currently tied for third in the conference with Stanford after the teams split matches against each other last week.

NATIONAL PROMINENCE: The team was ranked No. 5 in the AVCA preseason coaches poll after reaching the Final Four last

season and is currently ranked No. 10 in the poll. The Cougars reached the Final Four in three-straight seasons and won three national championships in 1999, 2001 and 2004.

INTERNATIONAL TALENT: BYU features four players from outside of the United States: Garcia Fernandez from Puerto Rico, Felipe

de Brito Ferreira from Brazil, Miki Jauhiainen from Finland and Gardini from Italy. All four start for the Cougars and are among the team leaders in kills, aces, digs and blocks. Gardini's father, Andrea, is a three-time Olympian in volleyball for Italy.

AWARDS WATCH LISTS: Garcia Fernandez racked up several preseason selections, including Off the Block/Springbak Preseason

First-Team All-American and the Bryan Ivie Award watch list for opposite hitters. De Brito Ferreira and junior Jauhiainen were both named to the Ryan Millar Award watch list for middle blockers.

WEEKLY RELEASE

PROVO, Utah -- No. 10 BYU men's volleyball welcomes No. 3 UC Irvine to the Smith Fieldhouse this weekend for back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday, both at 7 p.m. MT.

No. 10 BYU (8-5, 3-2 MPSF)

The Cougars are coming off two matches against No. 8 Stanford, winning one in Provo in five sets and losing the other in California in four sets. The win in the fifth-set overtime kept BYU undefeated at home this season. The Smith Fieldhouse ranks No. 2 in the nation in average attendance this year with 3,325 coming out each match, trailing Hawai'i by less than 200 fans per match for first place.

Davide Gardini earned his third Off the Block National Freshman of the Week honor for two standout performances against Stanford, becoming the only player in the nation with three selections this season. He had a career-high 22 kills on a .515 hitting percentage on Thursday in Provo and a career-high five block assists to go along with 13 kills and 10 digs for his second double-double of the season at Stanford on Saturday. He is the only BYU player with a double-double this season.

Sophomore Gabi Garcia Fernandez continued his consistent offensive output against the Cardinal, putting up 13 kills in each match to extend his double-digit streak to nine consecutive matches. He remains at the top of the MPSF in kills and points with 4.26 and 5.00 per set averages, respectively. He also contributed on the defensive end with eight total digs and six blocks on the week.

Junior middle blocker Miki Jauhiainen remains the anchor on the defensive end for the Cougars, with four-or-more blocks in each of his past four matches. He had five against Stanford in Provo and is second in the MPSF in blocks with 1.15 per set.

BYU as a team has set itself apart on the defensive end, leading the MPSF in blocks with 2.43 per set and ranking third in opponent hitting percentage at .256.

No. 3 UC Irvine (13-4, 2-2 MPSF)

The Anteaters lost back-to-back matches last week for the first time this season, getting swept twice by No. 2 Hawai'i at home in Irvine.

BYU owns the all-time series against UCI, 47-19, but the Anteaters have won three of four matchups in the past two years. The most recent BYU victory came in a sweep at home in the Smith Fieldhouse on Jan. 28, 2017.

Sophomore outside hitter Joel Schneidmiller leads the Anteaters on offense with 3.58 kills per set, while 7-foot junior Scott Stadick leads on defense with 1.34 blocks per set, good for fourth in the nation.

BYU's defense bests UCI's statistically with 11.6-13.0 and .256-.260 advantages in opponent kills and opponent hitting percentage, respectively, while the Anteaters take the cake on offense with 13.0-11.6 and .318-.311 leads in kills per set and hitting percentage, respectively.

The matches will be streamed live on and links for live stats can be found on the schedule page.

BYU COACHES

HEAD COACH SHAWN OLMSTEAD: 2015-present

After becoming head coach of the men's team in the summer of 2015, Olmstead coached the squad to the national championship match of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. He helped coach his team to an outright Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season and tournament title while being named the 2016 MPSF Coach of the Year. The Cougars finished with a 27-4 (19-3 MPSF) record in 2016.

Olmstead coached the 2017 squad to another MPSF regular-season title in addition to a second-straight national championship run in the NCAA tournament after going 26-5 (16-2 MPSF).

He was named the MPSF Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons after guiding his team to a 22-7 (10-2 MPSF) overall record in 2018. He led the squad to the national semifinals of the NCAA tournament for a third-straight season - the first such stretch in program history. Olmstead coached four AVCA All-Americans in 2018: Brenden Sander, Gabi Garcia Fernandez, Leo Durkin and Price Jarman.

Olmstead saw his most successful season as head coach of the BYU women's squad in 2014. He coached BYU to the national championship match of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. The Cougars became the first unseeded team in tournament history to make it to the final match. To get there, BYU upset No. 11 Arizona, No. 6 Florida State, No. 14 Nebraska and No. 2 Texas. The Cougars also won an outright West Coast Conference title after Olmstead led his squad to a 16-2 league record.

In 2013, Olmstead coached his team to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament for a second-consecutive year. The Cougars placed second in the West Coast Conference after narrowly losing a five-set battle at San Diego for the league title in the final regular-season match.

In 2011, Olmstead coached the BYU women's volleyball team to a 21-9 season, its first season with 20 or more wins since 2007. The 2011 season marked BYU's first time playing as a member of the WCC. Though picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches' poll, Olmstead helped the Cougars to a No. 3 ranking, tied with Saint Mary's, to end 2011.

Olmstead came to BYU with four years of coaching experience, most recently as an assistant coach for two years at Utah State under former BYU men's volleyball assistant coach Grayson DuBose. While at Utah State, Olmstead served as the program's recruiting coordinator, putting together the second-best recruiting class in the Western Athletic Conference in 2007. He also was responsible for defensive game preparation, including breaking down opponent film and preparing scouting reports. His efforts helped the Aggies rank 25th nationally in blocks per game in 2007.

Prior to his stint at Utah State, Olmstead spent one year as an assistant coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo, Calif., in 2005 where he also served as the recruiting coordinator and organized team travel. He helped the Mustangs achieve a 19-6 overall record, improving from 5-24 the year prior to Olmstead's arrival. Olmstead also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Utah Valley in 2004, right after graduating from BYU as a player from 2000-04.

ASSISTANT COACH DEVIN YOUNG: 2018-present

BYU men's volleyball head coach Shawn Olmstead announced in October the hiring of former Cougar Devin Young as an assistant coach. Young played middle blocker for the Cougars from 2008, 2011-14.

"As a staff and as a program we are excited about the addition of Devin," Olmstead said. "As a student-athlete at BYU, Devin was fortunate to be surrounded and mentored by great coaches and teammates. He was a part of some very successful teams here at BYU and learned the value of hard work and competition. It's always nice to have former Cougars on board to mentor our players that are striving to keep the tradition of excellence that is BYU volleyball."

As a player, Young helped the Cougars win the 2013 and 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season and tournament titles. BYU played in the NCAA tournament both years and advanced to the national championship match in 2013.

Young was named to the All-MPSF Second Team as a senior and made the MPSF All-Tournament Team in both 2013 and 2014. During his career, he averaged 1.38 kills per set as well as 1.09 blocks per set.

After graduating from BYU with a degree in business management, Young moved to Wisconsin where he stayed close to volleyball by coaching high school and club teams. In 2017, he returned to Utah to work for VolleyMetrics, a volleyball analytics company, where he worked with Division I volleyball coaches from across the country. Young served a mission in Long Beach, California, after redshirting during the 2008 season. He hails from McMurray, Pennsylvania, and is married to Marie. The couple have three children.

"I'm grateful for this amazing opportunity," Young said. "Thank you to Shawn Olmstead, Brian Santiago, Tom Holmoe and Vice President Matt Richardson for giving me the chance to be back at BYU. Some of my greatest memories are from playing in the Smith Fieldhouse in front of our amazing fans. I'm excited to be back in the gym and will work hard to maintain the high standard of excellence that everyone before me has built."

ASSISTANT COACH MICAH NAONE: 2018-present

BYU men's volleyball head coach Shawn Olmstead announced the hiring of Micah Naone as an assistant coach in June 2018. Naone joined the staff after having served as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2018 season.

"Micah was an integral part of our team's success over the last season," Olmstead said. "He was eager to learn each day and do all he could to contribute to our players and our staff. We look forward to Micah's presence on the road while recruiting and in the gym."

Naone helped the 2018 Cougars to a 22-7 (10-2 MPSF) record that saw BYU win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season and tournament championships. He coached four AVCA All-Americans while helping the Cougars advance to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament for the third-straight season -- the first time in BYU history.

Naone hails from Honolulu, Hawai'i, where he played outside hitter on the Kamehameha men's volleyball team along with former assistant coach Jaylen Reyes. He graduated from the University of Hawai'i West Oahu in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in business management.

Prior to his time at BYU, Naone assisted at multiple BYU volleyball camps. He also coached at various high schools, clubs and clinics in his home state of Hawai'i. Additionally, he helped his Aloha Region B club team to a gold medal at the USA High Performance Volleyball Championships.

"I'm really excited to be working here at BYU," Naone said. "I'm thankful to director of athletics Tom Holmoe, deputy athletic director Brian Santiago, BYU vice president Matt Richardson and head coach Shawn Olmstead for trusting me and giving me this opportunity. I want to help maintain the high standard that the program currently holds so that it continues to be successful."
