Match Outlook The No. 4 BYU men's volleyball team (14-7, 10-6 MPSF) remain at home this week as it hosts No. 10 UC Santa Barbara (10-11, 7-8 MPSF) for a two-match series on Friday and Saturday nights in the Smith Fieldhouse. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. MT and be televised live on BYU-TV.

The Cougars are tied with Hawai'i for four-place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings after a pair of wins over USC last week. Senior outside hitter Andrew Stewart earned MPSF Co-Player of the Week honors after combining for 43 kills over the two matches.

The Gauchos sit in ninth place in the conference standings after dropping a close five-set match at Pepperdine on March 13. They are led by Jeff Menzel who averages 5.41 kills per set.

Series Info BYU holds a 23-18 series advantage over the Gauchos thanks mostly to a 10-match winning streak between 1998 and 2003. The Cougars have beaten the Gauchos in seven of the last eight meetings. In total, 24 of the 41 decisions between the two have ended in sweeps while only four times has the competition gone to five sets, including the two matchups in 2009.

Coming Off... BYU is coming off a weekend sweep of No. 7 USC last weekend in Provo. Senior outside hitter Andrew Stewart totaled 43 kills over the two matches, including a career-high 27 on Friday. Senior opposite Kent Tuttle also posted double-digit kills both nights, while sophomore middle blocker Russell Lavaja totaled 14 blocks on the weekend.

BYU in the MPSF Tournament

Since 1993, BYU has qualified for the MPSF postseason tournament in 14 of 15 seasons, including 13 consecutive trips. The Cougars' all-time record in the MPSF tournament is 19-13. BYU has won the MPSF tournament three times and holds an 11-6 record in the first round, 5-5 record in the semifinals and 3-2 record in tournament finals. The Cougars won consecutive MPSF tournament championships in 2003 and 2004.

BYU in the NCAA Tournament

The Cougars have made four NCAA tournament appearances in the program's history. Impressively, BYU has brought home the hardware in three of its four NCAA tournament appearances. The Cougars boast a 7-1 overall record in NCAA tournament play and a perfect 4-0 record in national semifinal matches. The Cougars only loss in the NCAA tournament was in 2003 when they lost to Lewis in a five-game thriller. BYU has earned automatic bids to the Final Four by winning the MPSF tournament three times: 1999, 2003 and 2004.

All-Americans

Since 1993, 20 different players have earned All-America 38 citations, 14 of which are first-team honors and 13 of which are second-team honors. Most recently, Russell Holmes (First Team) and Ivan Perez (Second Team) were named AVCA All-Americans in 2008.

Home Court Advantage

BYU finished its 2009 season with a 9-3 (.750) record at the Smith Fieldhouse, facing teams like No. 1 UC Irvine, No. 5 Long Beach State, No. 10 UC San Diego and No. 10 UCLA. The Cougars have only lost seven home matches dating back to the 2006 season.

Preseason Exhibition BYU finished its exhibition schedule having won five of seven matches. The preseason opened with the annual Alumni Match. The team of former Cougars pulled out a 3-1 win over the current team. BYU then played against Long Beach State, Grand Canyon and Long Beach City College in Las Vegas, going undefeated in the tournament.

The Cougars then returned home to host the BYU Tournament, defeating Arizona and UVU, while losing again to the alumni. Seniors Andrew Stewart and Reed Chilton were named to the all-tournament team, while BYU assistant Rob Neilson coach earned MVP honors.

Where Are You From?

Players come from all over the world to play with BYU's volleyball team. The Cougars have players from Brazil, Puerto Rico and Venezuela on their roster. Seven states are also represented on this year's team: Arizona, California, Ohio, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada and Utah. California leads the way with six players hailing from the Golden State.
