GLOBAL FELINE HEALTH AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY

RESEARCH & EXPERIENCE FELLOWSHIPS

STUDENT APPLICATION

Professional veterinary students from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) are encouraged to apply for the Global Feline Health and Underserved Community Research and Experience Fellowships. Graduate students whose major professor is a SVM faculty member can only apply for the Global Feline Health Fellowships. Make sure to visit the Office for Global Programs website and review the ‘Information and Conditions’ for Global Feline Health and Underserved Community Fellowships under ‘Student Funding’ before applying. For questions you can contact Carolyn Forlee at cforlee@ucdavis.edu.

Eligibility: Students are required to be in good academic standing and must not have any “Y” grades. First- and second-year DVM students in the UCD SVM must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of the committee’s review of applications.  If the GPA is below 3.0 at the time the Committee reviews the applications (generally late February), the student will not be considered further.

After completing this application form, applicants should send a single e-mail, along with all application support materials and Mentor Letter in one PDF attachment addressed to Carolyn Forlee at cforlee@ucdavis.edu by midnight on February 10, 2021. Multiple emails with attachments are discouraged.

To Serve as a Mentor:

While all faculty within the University of California Davis are eligible to serve as mentors for students, they are expected to fulfill certain criteria. Along the guidelines of the American Physiological Society, a successful mentor is one who engages in a dynamic process whereby mentor and mentee both learn to respect and trust each other’s commitment, expertise, and individuality.  To sign up as a mentor, a faculty member must commit to the mentoring process and be willing to invest time, energy and resources into the relationship.  The text of the relationship can be difficult to define, because mentoring is in many ways an elusive concept and an individual process.  However, a mentor must possess the following characteristics:

• Be a faculty member at UC Davis (for DVM students) or at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (for graduate students)

• Be actively engaged in research and possess expertise in the subject of the research proposal

• Be available and commit to active engagement with their student throughout duration of the fellowship

• Agree to ensure the student fulfills the conditions of award

• Will review and approve the student’s video before submission to the Office for Global Programs in September

As a faculty mentor, I have read and agree to the above terms outlining m responsibilities as a mentor.

(This may include support from the host institution, use of some of the fellowship funds or other creative funding mechanisms you and the student have considered.)
