Course Catalog Description: A careful study, with emphasis on proofs, of the following topics associated with the set of integers: divisibility, congruences and modular arithmetic, arithmetic functions, sums of squares, and elementary results on distributions of primes. The history of various developments in the subject, along with biographies of important contributors, will be included. Required Prerequisites: MATH 1360 and MATH 2150.

Text: Elementary Number Theory, by Burton, 7th edition.

Exams: There will be three 75-minute exams throughout the semester. Here is a pretty good idea of when exams will happen; their exact dates, and the exact material which they will cover, will be announced well in advance. Each of these is weighted equally, and in total are worth 85% of your course grade.

Exam I: Wednesday Feb 26 Chapters 1,2,3

Exam II: Monday April 6 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.2, 5.3, 6.1, 7.2, 7.3, 10.1

Exam III: Wednesday May 13* 8.1, 8.2, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 12.1, 14.2

(*Exam III happens during the final exam period, which is Wednesday, May 13, 12:40 - 2:40pm. N.b.: The time period for Exam III does not intersect the usual time period for the class. Exam III will simply be a standard 75 minute exam. Exam III will start in the classroom at 1:20pm on May 13.) No makeup exams will be given unless arrangements have been made prior to the date of the exam. Missed exams will be scored as a zero.

Homework: Homework is worth 15% of your course grade. There will be a homework assignment given almost every day of the class. Typically, homework will be due on Wednesday of the week following its assignment (so that typically there will be two homework assignments due each Wednesday). Homework must be submitted by 5:00pm on the due date. The homework you submit should be complete, on time, and with all work shown. These will be graded on a 5 point scale. I encourage you to use any types of resources in order to complete the homework, e.g. instructor, classmates, etc … Homework will not be accepted more than a week late.

Please fully familiarize yourself with the document "Guidelines, expectations, and cautionary words …" regarding the standards to be used when I grade both Homework and Exams.

PASSessions: Jacob Lojewski will be our PASS leader this semester. PASSessions / Jacob will be a great resource, of which I would encourage you to take full advantage. PASSession times / locations:

Tuesdays 4:30 - 6:00pm, room TBD; Fridays 1:30 - 3:00pm, ENG 247.
