School Leadership Team Meeting Minutes March 15, 2019APPROVEDMeeting called to order by Dr. Caraisco at 7:34 a.m.In attendance: Janet Caraisco, Stacy Gangi, Ann Marie Zovich, Theresa Lotti, Michelle Gilbert, Zanna Tiu, Gabriella Carratu, Tina Tiu and Zoltan Antal, [Myrna-Perez Fung(observer), Laura Kennedy-note taker] Motion to approve January minutes approved.Motion to approve February minutes approved. SLT BUSINESSDr. Caraisco mentioned that Laura Kennedy will be taking minutes at the March, April, May and June meetings. SLT BYLAWSWe need to update the bylaws next month, finalize it in June and revise in September. SLT vacancies: PTA will replace outgoing members Gabriella Carratu and Wellington Luna at their election. UFT will hold election to fill slot that will be vacated by Ann Marie Zovich. If a DC 37 member wishes to join the SLT, another spot has to be filled for the parents-both sides need equal number of members. A teacher questioned if a member can be removed from SLT if they are absent for two or more meetings. Dr. Caraisco addressed the question and stated that we should find out the circumstances of their absences and then we can move on from there. \The UFT Co-chair pointed out that Laura Kennedy as recorder should be removed from the bylaws because she is not a member of the SLT. There have not been any updates on SLT training dates as of today. Dr. Caraisco will advise when these dates become available. Uniform policy is not up for review this year. CEP5A: Goals are being met that by the end of June more than 80% of our teachers will be “highly effective’. As of today, 63% of teachers are highly effective and 30% are effective. 5B: The Supportive Environment measurement tool is not working for us this year. The tool will probably work much better next year. Number of Level 3 incidents from February-March was 5 - down from 42 from September – January. Number of Level 4 incidents from February–March was 3 - down from 34 from September – January. Goals can be extended for next year. A parent asked if the incidents are compared from year to year. Principal responded that if you compare 2010-2019 OORS reports, you will see a jump in the number of incidents due to the way incidents are now being reported in the Dept. of Education. UFT Co-chair asked if specific incidents can be provided; i.e. weapons brought to school, fighting etc.A second teacher pointed out that it might not be an accurate way to compare because students leave the school. The principal agreed because last year two students tallied up most of the infractions and they have since left the school. A third teacher inquired as to consequences of infractions. The principal explained how the Discipline Code from the Department of Education dictates consequence of infractions. 5C: UFT Co-chair pointed out that because of ADVANCE rating, teachers that attend Professional Development outside the school are not getting credit. Dr. Caraisco agreed and stated that it’s important that Professional Development be equal in quality and quantity in order for it to be effective. Next year, according to the new teachers’ contract, highly effective teachers will be observed two times per year. It was mentioned that, if the budget dictates, there is a possibility to ask Kathy Levine to return to help do observations while the assistant principal, Christina Nartowicz, is out on maternity leave. 5D: We are on target regarding the professional learning cycles. 5E: The principal suggested to remove RULER approach from the CEP to keep it more general. Mrs. Nartowicz did presentations at the PTA meeting which will be completed by the end of June. A teacher inquired as to the status of Go Math. The Dept. of Education may not renew the vendor’s contract this year. The principal explained that P.S. 188 uses the Core Curriculum through the Dept. of Education. All books ordered through Core Curriculum is fully funded through the DOE. If we decided to divert from the Core Curriculum, all books will be financed through the school’s budget. A parent inquired as to whether the books will hold the same standards for the state tests. The principal explained that teachers and administration make sure that the program meets the state standards. GRANTS/BUDGETThe principal met with a representative from Senator John Liu’s office to discuss if and what Senator Liu can do for our school.Kupferberg residence is finished.Casa Dance program has two more meetings. The principal will meet to discuss programs for first, second and fourth grade: Latin Dance and Latin Percussion.Dept. of Education dropped $11,000.00 into our budget but then took back $6,000.00 for payback. $5,000.00 went for supplies; some of that money went onto the P-card because we can use that to purchase supplies until the end of June. MISCELLAENOUSUFT Co-chair mentioned that on May 18, there will be a spring conference where members can meet vendors and see what books are available. If a member attends the spring conference, this can count toward your SLT hours. Meeting was adjourned at 8:32 a.m. Respectfully submitted,Laura Kennedy ................
