Davis, Founding Principal: ptechnyc@schools.POSITION:Guidance CounselorDESCRIPTION:The Pathways in Technology Early College High School (also known as P-TECH) will: a) collaborate with City Tech so that students have the opportunity to earn an associate degree in the sciences, technology, engineering or math (STEM) prior to graduation; b) design a sequence of experiential learning opportunities where students will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to enter and succeed in high-potential entry-level STEM jobs, as defined by IBM and other industry partners; and c) provide innovative models of instruction, including competency-based pathways and project-based learning. School staff is encouraged to attend the two annual faculty weekend retreats, an annual student orientation, and participate in after school tutoring and summer programs (Compensation according to the UFT contract and advance notice will be provided. Staff participation in this activity is voluntary, but strongly encouraged, as it is very important to the development of the school)ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Licensed certified guidance counselor in New York City Schools, with satisfactory ratings and attendance. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Because roles in P-TECH are varied and complex, serious consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate in their resume and cover letter experience and/or willingness to commit to the school’s mission and core beliefs and to become involved in these essential aspects: Work within a non-traditional schedule and organizational structure that meets the needs of all students including English Language Learner (ELL) students. Develop a plan for professional growth in collaboration with the Principal and/or Assistant Principal that will monitor progress and assess effectiveness in enhancing student achievement Serve as a high school advisor. Advisors serve as advocates for a group of students, as primary and frequent contact for students’ families, aid in the development of advisory course curricula with an emphasis on the school’s CTE theme as well as guide students throughout significant academic milestones such as a Work Based Learning experience, college application, career planning, etc. SELECTION CRITERIA: The successful candidate will demonstrate: Evidence of willingness to carry out the above duties and responsibilities Evidence of successful counseling strategies with regard to academic readiness, discipline-related guidance issues, social and emotional development, conflict mediation, graduation requirements Experience preferred, but willingness to be trained in providing counseling strategies for substance abuse Experience collaborating on an inter-disciplinary grade level team Knowledge of English Language Learners and Special Education standards Ability to retrieve, organize, and report student data using NYCDOE DATA SYSTEMS (e.g. ARIS, HSST, AIS, SESIS) as well as school specific student data using Skedula and Google Apps for Education. All applicants must provide three (3) professional references. One should include a supervisor, if available. Others might include a peer with whom the applicant has collaborated, and/or a faculty development or professional organization representative.
