Patient Safety Leadership - MS

Program Description

It's time for change in healthcare. It's time for interprofessional, patientcentered thinking that measurably improves the quality and safety in patient care. It's time for you to lead the change.

The UIC Patient Safety Leadership Program offers you the opportunity to learn ways to lead your organization to a culture of high quality patient care.

The Master of Science in Patient Safety Leadership is designed to develop leaders in the field of patient safety. The program delivers practical information that you can apply immediately to your work and integrates activities that align directly with professions in patient safety.

The Master of Science degree is offered online with a one week on-site residency in Chicago. The graduate degree focuses on inter-professional teamwork, simulation training, communication, collaboration and organizational change. You will learn to design, implement and lead a broad range of patient safety and quality healthcare activities. You will also connect with experienced faculty and a multidisciplinary network of fellow healthcare professionals who, like you, are committed to improving patient safety.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the online MS program, you must have:

? An undergraduate degree; graduate coursework or a graduate degree is preferred ? A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) overall, as well as in

the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework

? A cumulative graduate GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale), if graduate coursework has been completed ? A strong commitment to the field of patient safety and an interest in improving the quality of healthcare

All applicants will be required to submit:

? An online UIC graduate application and application fee ? Your unofficial transcripts or proof of degree ? Your personal statement ? A current resume or curriculum vitae ? Two letters of recommendation

International applicants or those who have taken international coursework must also submit:

? Proof of English language proficiency ? An international credential evaluation fee

Degree Requirements

Students must complete nine (9) courses for a total of 36 credit hours to earn the Master of Science in Patient Safety Leadership. Each course is four (4) credit hours. Courses must be taken in the order shown below. PSL students typically take one course per eight-week term. The MS in Patient Safety Leadership degree can be earned online in 20 ? 22 months if courses are taken in back-to-back terms.

? PSL 401: Patient Safety and Quality Care Improvement (4 hours) ? PSL 402: Error Science, Risk and Disclosure (4 hours) ? PSL 403: Communication and Collaboration (4 hours) ? PSL 404: Organizational Leadership/Health Systems (4 hours) ? PSL 501: Healthcare Simulation, Team and Applied Leadership Principles (includes on-site residency in Illinois) (4 hours) ? PSL 502: Health Sciences Research and Information Technology (4 hours) ? PSL 503: Economics, Policy and Environment (4 hours) ? PSL 504: Creating Human and System Change (4 hours) ? PSL 597: Capstone Project (4 hours)
