The City has been doing a great job of keeping the Park entry road clear when the snow falls. . There was finally?enough snow this past week for cross-country skiing in the Park.Volunteer Training sessions took place on January 19th and 22nd and soon we will have more open hours. Arctic ice to reduce the rate of melting. The talk is co-sponsored by the Stillwater Schools Native American Parent Advisory Committee and the Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center. It is free and open to the public.Summer Camp Registration?is planned for February. The planning is still underway but these mini-camps will take place Monday-Thursday between June 17th and August 8th, with a different topic each week. There are camps for ages 4-6, ages 7-8 and a few for ages 9-11?. The home-school group helped adorn the Nature Center.? Balsam-fir branches in four of the windows were decorated with old-fashioned hand-strung cranberries and puff-corn. Wreaths with chains of construction paper rings enliven the mezzanine barrier.? A band of orphaned over-baked gingerbread boys was left in our care, they were so hard that even a coffee dip would not soften them. They are so sturdy that Tony was able to drill 1/4" holes in 59 out of 60 of them (only one broke). They look very festive suspended with string or ribbon on the branches, wreaths, and some of the windows.?Volunteer Training Scheduled for January 19th and 22nd. Have you considered volunteering at the nature center but are not sure what is involved?? We are having two no-obligation Partner Roundup sessions, Saturday January 19th from 9-Noon and Tuesday January 22nd from 1-4 PM.? IF either of the meetings is snowed out (that is if Park entry road is not plowed) we have scheduled a snow day for Saturday January 26th from 9-Noon.? We will talk about our vision for the nature center, explain what is expected of reception partners, nature education partners, board members, and other partners, and try to answer any questions you may have.? Or email?becky.tenpas@sminc-lake-The First Annual Sunfish Lake Buckthorn Festival took place on Saturday November 10th, and was wildly successful.? Seventy people competed on six teams to remove buckthorn, including three goats from the Munch Bunch.? The workers then had a free lunch of buckthorn-roasted chili dogs (with chili from Gorman's restaurant), Billy Hagberg's special-recipe Buckthorn Beefsticks, cookies from the Lake Elmo Inn, coffee from Lake Elmo Coffee Shop, and Connie's buckthorn leaf cookies, buckthorn bark, and buckthorn logs. 100 people total were fed, those who rolled doubles on the buckthorn dice also ate free. George was crowned King of the Buckthorn Warriors.? Music was provided by Don Wodek (accordion) and Charlie Prokop (Guitar).? There were also buckthorn games to play - croquet, bucket toss, pick-up sticks, tic-tac-toe, and Yahtzee. The first two ongoing projects are the fish survey of Sunfish Lake, and the photographic butterfly census of the Park. We have some interesting videos of the process, and hope to put an edited version on our website in the near future.? The beautifully colored leaves of?Fall are nearly all down in the Park, but the?green of buckthorn remains. This is a great time to remove buckthorn, because?there?is little chance to mistakenly remove a native species.?Community groups such as the Lake Elmo JayCees and the Stillwater school district?Native American Parent Advisory Committee? have begun?meeting at the nature center. We hosted a visit from residents of Arbor Glen Senior Living the afternoon of?Thursday November 1st, featuring a guided trail walk by our home-school partners and a hearty lunch of chicken wild rice soup, scones, and tea.? Sometimes we have a volunteer guide to lead a trail walk, other times it is self-guided. The Prairie trail was beautiful in mid-July with everything in bloom, fluttering with butterflies and buzzing with dragonflies. A dry spell in late July nearly eliminated the flowers, but recent rains have helped. The wooded trails are very nice, the trees are doing well, bring insect repellent. After your walk, which can be as short or as long as you wish, we have coffee and snacks available. We have a nature jigsaw puzzle to work on, friendly volunteers to chat with, interesting exhibits to see, and a slowly growing nature library.FEE Prairie Pioneer Tea Party? Wednesday August 29th 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. When the pioneer women came in covered wagons to this area in the 1840's they brought their best china wrapped in quilts, but there were no nearby stores to get tea or scones. So how did they host a tea party?? Come and experience Connie's tea and goodies made form only what the pioneers would have have available. Carla Ryan will show you how to make centerpieces from wild plants found in the woods and prairie.? $20, attendance is limited to first 25 guests. If you are socially inclined and have a few hours a week to spare, please sign up. Duties include talking to people and giving them information, making coffee, watering the plants, putting out snacks, reporting maintenance issues, and opening or closing up.We have 7 exhibit frames finished and 5 more to assemble - if you are ok with small power tools and a caulking gun, we have a few days of interesting activity for you.? These frames will display the exhibits on the prairie restoration, the butterflies of Sunfish Lake Park, the Aquatic Life of Sunfish Lake Park, etc.,?We have an area planned for a small amphitheater to the east of the building - we are hoping for a donor of suitable stone to construct this outdoor venue for classes or lectures.An Eagle Scout candidate has volunteered to build the planters for the labelled specimens of prairie plants that we will have along the trial up to the prairie.?There is an opportunity for a person or small group to build birdhouses (a dozen or more) to put on posts defining the acre that the Friends are leasing from the City of Lake Elmo, and encouraging various species of birds..We are looking for more Citizen Science participants. The first two projects are the fish survey of Sunfish Lake, and the photographic butterfly census of the Park. If you would like to do something similar with any of the animals or plants of the Park, we would be happy to work with you.Photo contest - we would? are hoping to have some photo contests of pictures taken in the Park. The submitted images would be judged by a group of professionals, and the 12 selected in each category would be converted to calendars to be available in the nature center.We are looking for help with accounting and marketing and fundraising.
